Warning: This is the book that really started my obsession with WW1. Hochschild focuses on the strong but futile anti-war movement in Britain (a combatant that was not attacked), and really illustrates how complicated and tragic the Great War is. This book introduced me to new heroes who were against the War and undermined previous heroes like Arthur Conan Doyle who supported the War with jingoistic fever.
