Oh boy, this is lovely! I got sunburnt in Scotland in a cloudy day, but never again! Awesome :)
Ps. I really liked the app, just got it installed and selected my skin type (II), so I'll certainly use it in weekends and such. Is it free always by the way @techno246 ? :-)
@victormanriquey Thanks! :D as a Kiwi, I have been burnt far too many times here in New Zealand! So that's why we decided to do something about. And like you said, clouds can be very deceptive... as well as heat, since you can't actually feel UV (heat is from infrared)
@victormanriquey Gladto hear you like the app! What's free now will always be free! I am also a huge disbeliever in banner ads... So there won't be any ads any time soon either haha
@_alexfi As far as I know, I don't think there are any good publicly available APIs for UV forecasting. I've only found them bundled with other weather data, and they would only give you a single estimate for the entire day, which isn't very helpful. To that end, we decided to build our own, using irradiance, ozone, cloud, and aerosol forecasts. During clear days, the forecasts over the day are usually to 0.1 of a UV index to the measured values.
If there is interest, we can open up our APIs the other developers :) We have built it as a REST service.

@techno246 This would be great. Can you keep me up-to-date?
@_alexfi Of course! Flick me an email at ming.cheuk@spark64.com and I'll let you know when we open it up. Might even be able to get you a private API key in the mean time to experiment with.

Excellent, will come handy for the long summer hikes! Might be getting the PH hug of love right now but I can't seem to get past the License Agreement screen (on Android). After clicking Accept I get a pop-up message "An error occurred, please try again later".
@techno246 Looks good, I was able to get through. It does limit my viewing times to the next 3 hours only. I can't check on the time ahead or before current time. Is this intentional?
@sarthakgrover Yes, that is intentional. You cannot see forecasts that have already lapsed. However, we are currently in discussion about removing that restriction (we have already removed it on the web app on app.uvlens.com), so your feedback on this would be good. Would you prefer to be able to see forecasts for previous times, as well as forecasts the next day in advance?
Report
@techno246 Personally yes, that would go a long way in planning for things. I've had to change the hike locations sometimes due to some obvious temperature warnings but a UV reference would be quite useful as well in that context.
As for the past, I think it'll be good to have some historic information as sometimes you just want to look back and see what level's of UV you were dealing with a day before when you were out and about (and perhaps hadn't looked at that time).

Does it check if there are clouds? Checked for Kiev (Ukraine) today. It is cloudy and rainy, but app says about high UV
@sergesmalko yes it does factor in cloud, aerosol and surface reflectivity effects. Clouds have an interesting effect on UV. Most of the times it attenuates it, but sometimes not by much on rare occasions enhance it (scattered). Having said that, weather systems are very dynamic and can change last minute (especially here in New Zealand).
Hi Product Hunt Community! My name is Ming and I am a co-founder of UVLens. Growing up in New Zealand, we frequently get roasted in the sun (not thanks to our location on the globe and hole in the ozone above us). The beautiful beaches and mountains don't help either!
We decided to try solve this problem in 2013 with a wearable UV sensor that tracks your exposure and warns you when you've had enough. After many iterations and pivots, we developed the technology further and figured out a way to provide accurate forecasts of UV levels to anyone in the world, without the need to purchase your own sensor. This is possible with the help of forecasts from satellite data and ground sensors measuring real time UV. UVLens is currently in the process of being integrated with a network of 5000 sensors all over the world, so you can get live UV data local to you (some countries already live).
Our mission is to provide people with accurate and practical UV information to safely enjoy the sun! No one should ever have to ever fear the sun :)
We'd love to hear your thoughts, feedback or ideas! I am also happy to answer any questions you may have.
I found bug in the app. Getting different result for same location.
1. When I enter location manually- http://imgur.com/VIbPc3q
2. When I keep user location on- http://imgur.com/MyZKRqz
First one is correct.
@keyul thanks so much for reporting this bug! I have heard of this problem before from people overseas but had no idea what was triggering it. When I test it locally, I always choose to input manually to test the international location and couldn't replicate it.
An update will be pushed out ASAP!
@keyul Turns out the bug is indeed in when the location is found automatically, and the user is at longitude below 0° (westwards). Pushing and update now! Android should be fixed in 12 hours.
@techno246 working perfectly now. But data refresh is very solve.

I like this idea, however, when I try to enter my location manually, the keyboard covers the field form and I can't see what I'm typing. Also, the times aren't accurate. I'm only able to see times between 12AM-6AM when I want to use it now at 12PM.
@vickihlee Thanks for reporting the bug! @keyul found that the wrong times are shown when the location is found automatically (as opposed to manually entered). Can you confirm that the times were incorrect when it's set to use user location?
Should be fixed within the next few days!
Report
@techno246 It works now! I didn't allow the app to access my location and manually typed in my location instead. Thanks! Looking forward to the new update. :)
