Was working on a similar idea a while back - had bought startupbookie.com to use for it :)
Ryan makes a really good point about the feedback cycle. I like betting on valuation, but I was thinking that there are a lot of other viable things eg. taking a round of financing, going out of business, getting bought, getting written up in [TC | mashable | etc], Mattermark score ;-), forming partnerships and so on
@kgdavis Yeah, I like this idea a lot. Trying to think of a way to work it in without adding too much complexity. Let me know if you have any ideas/suggestions.
@buster oh, this makes me sad! I hate to say it but we had the same idea as a side project. We even had a domain, but never got to building it. We planned to use Salary Fairy's prediction crowdsourcing engine: https://salaryfairy.com
You've got a great start. My only feedback would be not to show the crowd prediction before making a prediction. Predictions should be independent for 'wisdom of the crowds' to work. Best of luck :)
@cagriaksay I am strongly considering that. I might try a simple a/b test to see how behavior changes if you hide the data... on the one hand we might get more predictions, on the other hand there might be less retention and reason to come back unless you feel like doing the work.
@buster one more thing public companies should link to google finance or yahoo finance page not crunch base. Like for example Amazon at the moment links to crunchbase :/
