@eriktorenberg great question! originally, the goal of VCWiz was to be a recommendation engine for founders, with cutting-edge ML powering theoretically optimal matches. for all the nerdy details, see my Master's thesis proposal (https://goo.gl/zjGDof). over time, after interviewing and working with a ton of founders, it became apparent that the solution which provided the most utility wasn't *that* technically sophisticated from a data standpoint (which was a major tradeoff, since the fancy ML parts are fun to build!). we set out to build a clean, easy-to-use product with an extremely rich data set, while also integrating into as many existing workflows as possible. the biggest lesson along the way was that the bar for replacing a spreadsheet is actually quite high, so we needed to address a lot of the small details to get a sticky product. the other big realization was that design really matters: we had an earlier version with similar functionality but 0 design love, and no one touched it.

Hey Guys! Your platform is really cool :) I'm just wondering, how are you guys planning to make money? Is it based on the funds the startup will raise? Or are you going to charge the VC for being on your platform once you reach a decent amount of users?

VCWiz is our attempt to use software to democratize the process, and make the right information available to everyone. First Search (https://www.producthunt.com/post...) is another great example of this. there are no current plans to monetize the platform.

Using it and sent a few intros already. Questions: 1. Does the software just send a cold-email to investors or they have actually opted-in to receive mails? Trying to judge if a cold email is better for response rate. 2. I am actively trying to reach out to FirstRound, but no warm intros :P. Do you suggest i use VCWiz or drop a cold email?

@_anupg 1. Double opt-in, just like a human intro would be! 2. VCWiz is a nicer interaction for both sides. More predictable format, and easier to respond to OR ignore for the investor, so it doesn't feel like spam.

@maddie_hall1 thanks Maddie! The tradeoff is difficult, because we think both are so crucial. There are plenty of CRM tools out there, and fewer, though some, discovery tools. The true value of VCWiz comes from marrying these, so you can research investors while seeing your paths and managing your outreach to them. We gave the CRM side a lot of love, so the focus now is upping our discovery game—adding more intelligence and data sources.

@yasyf 100% agree- A good CRM is so crucial to user experience and retention, it makes sense to have that portion of the product be super usable before increasing the db size of investors and adding more discovery/personalization functions.

I'm a huge fan of the ability to link up your email and let VCWiz track your correspondence for you; it's a huge pain to have to do this manually, and automating it this way is a great idea.

The design of the website is nice - very clean and clear cut. I also really like the option to look at a specific startup and see which investors have worked with them in the past (which provides an idea of who other members of the marketplace worked with).

Pros:

Great place to centralize the process of reaching out to venture capital firms and track your progress with each of them

Cons:

Seems like there might be a few UI quirks but overall the functionality seems to be in place
