The intent isn't to simulate closeness - it's closer to what a receptionist who's been there for years does: remembers you ordered the usual, or that you called about a leaking pipe last week, so you don't have to re-explain yourself. That's continuity, not intimacy. Where I'd agree it gets uncomfortable is if a business leans on that memory to fake a personal touch it hasn't actually earned - that's on how they use it, and honestly a fair line I don't have a clean answer for yet.
@david_marko the distinction holds as long as it is strictly functional, but the problem starts the second an agent uses that history to simulate "warmth" or care instead of just skiping redundant questions
