Hey all, I've been building Whorl for a while, and today is a real milestone for me. Whorl is a browser-based generative design tool for making visuals, still or in motion. Posters for event communication, brand assets, music-video loops, conference identities, visuals for corporate presentations, that kind of thing. It runs on desktop or tablet. As an interaction designer, I've always used code as a design tool: to bring things to life, to figure out how things should look and, especially, feel. That last part is where play and surprise come in. I was the first designer at Adobe to design for touch, and spent eight years there as a principal designer. After Adobe, I wanted to spend some time creating generative art. That led to wrapping an interface around it, so everybody could experience the joy I get from creating and playing with generative visuals in motion. It became the Whorl iOS app, which stayed alive on its own, loved mostly by casual creators. Fast forward past another big corporate chapter, as a managing design director at Uber, and I wanted to turn Whorl into a more powerful tool while holding tightly to the principle of play. Today I'm sharing exactly that: the Whorl web app, with all the controls for professionals who want to create unique visuals in motion, while keeping the playful feel of the original iOS app. And while we're all figuring out what AI means for software, I ended up not using it. Whorl just didn't need it. Real-time, playful, easy to use. That turned out to be the more powerful foundation. How access works: Whorl launches publicly in August.
