Over the past year, we ve watched engineering teams fall into a dangerous trap: chasing fake velocity.

Tools like Cursor, Copilot, and AI agents made generating code 10x faster. But writing lines of code was never the real bottleneck. As a result, AI didn't streamline IT - it just scaled the chaos.

Here is the vicious cycle happening in dev teams right now:

1. The Hype Pressure: Leadership sees the AI hype and floods product backlogs with 4x more feature requests.

2. The Code Inflation: Engineering hires AI tools to keep up - generating mountains of unverified code, endless pull requests, subtle bugs, and hidden architectural debt.

3. The Babysitting Tax: Senior engineers stop building and spend 50% of their day acting as full-time "AI babysitters," drowning in code reviews and manual handoffs.

I believe that cloud providers should make hard spending caps the default: when you hit your limit, everything stops, rather than you getting a warning email you only see after the damage.
