While there's plenty of skepticism and critique of Apple digitally narrating millions of its audiobooks — not only does this direction seem inevitable, but if you set aside the commercial imperatives, you also realize that stories and knowledge can and should be told and shared in any and all applicable mediums, with some mediums offering natural advantages — and others filling in the gap. For example, I've long enjoyed Amazon's WhisperSync, the ability to read with my eyes and listen with ears any books that's made available for Audible and Kindle. Increasingly, pan-media experiences will be enabled by AI, and taken in the course of history, that's a good thing. And so is this.

Just in case anyone is unaware. You've been able to do something similar on a Mac for a long time. I realise this will seem like a crude hack in comparison, but it works fine for me while I'm driving, exercising, or getting dinner ready. Go to "Accessibility" under "System Preferences", then "Spoken Content". Select the voice you like, and the reading speed and then I have "Speak Selection" ticked. Open your PDF or eBook, select the first page, and press 'play'. My iPhone will keep reading the book until I stop it or am interrupted (ie phone call). On the Desktop, it only wants to read just the selected text (mild pain), but I make the page large and let it run for a few minutes at a time.
