People are switching from OpenAI to Claude following Sam Altman's announcement today.

TL;DR: Anthropic refused to sign a contract with the Pentagon that would have allowed the U.S. military to use all of its models without restrictions. Anthropic insisted on an exception, and brace yourself, that its models cannot be used: 1) for mass surveillance of citizens, 2) for autonomous killing. Now the administration is threatening that if the founder of Anthropic doesn't change his mind by a certain date, they will come after him.

Google, OpenAI, and Musk (Grok) have all signed the contract.

Following Sam Altman's announcement over the past few hours, people have been speaking out massively about cancelling their OpenAI subscriptions and subscribing to Claude.

  • What stance do you take toward big tech companies after this?

  • Are you staying loyal to ChatGPT, or are you switching to Claude?

BTW, one of the users on Reddit proclaimed about Claude:

"Claude needs time to warm up to you. It's strange, but somehow that's just how it works with Claude. It's the most human-adjacent AI I've ever used." I am switching too.

Claude is the #1 free app on the App Store in the US and Canada.

I took screenshots of the App Store's Top Free Apps ranking across 7 countries at the exact same time (March 1, 2026, 09:00 UTC) to compare AI app adoption.

The results:
- US: #1
- Canada: #1
- France: #3
- Germany: #3
- UK: #4
- Italy: #8
- Japan: #22

AI adoption varies significantly across developed nations. English-speaking countries lead, Western Europe follows closely, and Japan β€” one of the most tech-advanced nations β€” tells a completely different story.

Mar 2 22:00 UTC: France and Germany both hit #1! Japan climbing steadily from #22 β†’ #14 β†’ #10. The world is catching on.

Mar 3 22:00 UTC: UK climbed to #3, Italy to #4. Japan holding at #10. All countries showing positive total change.

@daisuke_adachiΒ Europe should try more to make it no1.

Daisuke Adachi

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Agreed! As of 13 hours later, Claude climbed to #2 in Germany and #5 in Italy. Japan jumped from #22 to #14 too. It's moving fast.

Nika

@daisuke_adachiΒ We should need one more faux pas from OpenAI, Grok or any other company to make Anthropic the most popular. πŸ˜…

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Anthropic, like Apple, has strong intrinsic value β€” and I believe that is what will ultimately take it to the top. Think Different!

Tronin Denis

My full support to Claude and Anthropic. The company makes amazing product and it helps me so much.

Nika

@d_troninΒ Claude for the win!

Girik Gangwani

It's funny how @OpenAI claims to have the same exceptions as @Claude by Anthropic and having got the deal. That's what doesn't sit just right with me.

Also it's even funnier how we as humans always have the tendency to make things mutually exclusive (either this or that).

I have been a power user of claude, but since past 2 days, their uptime has been a major concern, now this sparks questions around entire infra being built on top of them...

Nika

@girik_7Β (IMO, any of these companies are the best) It is just business. If they reject one "bad" offer, they will fall for something else :D

Switched to Claude a while ago and never looked back. It's not just about ethics - Claude genuinely feels different to work with. More thoughtful, more collaborative.

That "human-adjacent" description is spot on - it really does feel like working with someone, not just prompting a tool.

The Anthropic stance just confirms I made the right choice. Now let's just hope no one launches missiles at their servers πŸ™ƒ

Nika

@virtualvikiΒ Do you also have a pro version? I am really considering supporting them tho I have a different tool prepaid. Just to show some sympathy.

Viktoriia

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Yes, I have Pro! Honestly worth it - the longer context and priority access make a real difference when you're in the middle of building something.

And yeah, after today's news it feels even better to support them.

Nika

@virtualvikiΒ Today I read that almost 70% of the OpenAI research team quit. This is a very interesting twist. πŸΏπŸ‘€

Viktoriia

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Wild times! From what I see, researchers leaving over concerns about OpenAI prioritizing ChatGPT growth over safety research, plus the ads in ChatGPT controversy.

One economist even wrote in his farewell that the research team became a "propaganda arm"

70% sounds dramatic but the brain drain is definitely real 😬

Been heavy claude user so welcome all claudenewbies onboard 🫑

Nika

@baseddesignerΒ claudenewbie here. πŸ‘‹

Jose Sanchez

I deleted OpenAI and the market spoke. There was almost 300% surge on uninstalls.

Nika

@norteappΒ I can confirm that now, I control myself not to type ChatGPT into the browser but Claude instead :)

The interesting thing is how quickly people β€œswitch” when using AI tools directly, but for teams building products on top of these models it’s rarely that simple. Changing providers usually means dealing with different model behaviors, pricing structures, rate limits, and reliability patterns.

This is why a lot of teams eventually start thinking in terms of multi-model setups instead of loyalty to a single provider.

Nika

@pashupathiΒ for sure, because everybody in the team has different preferences and also different setup for work. That's why I like being solo lately :D

Dishant Singh

For me its all about large contexts so it was either Claude or Google, bt will stick with claude after this... and damn i didn't knew about any of this..

Nika

@dishantsinghdevΒ Thanks to that, Claude started growing pretty fast.

Marat
I've been using a paid Perplexity account, which let's you switch between models, for almost everything other than coding. Claude for coding, as I think it does the best job at that, although Open AI's latest release of Codex is extremely impressive as well. I love the moral stance of Amodei. The problem is that there will be others (or already are) that will quickly replace them and agree to whatever the current people in charge of Pentagon want.
Nika

@outofelementΒ replacing – yes, but atm, Amodei received a huge support!

Just commented this on on Claude Import Memory but felt it was relevant here too.

Wild how AI models have basically developed political reputations at this point and now have actual fanbases because of it. Fascinating direction for this industry.

I've been preferring Claude lately, feels like it's pulling ahead, but I'm sure it'll keep swinging back and forth. Perplexity is looking really solid too.
