I work in smart metering (HES, MDMS, prepaid meters), and reading this felt very familiar. Utilities have been pricing variable consumption for decades: time-of-use tariffs, slab pricing, prepaid wallets, and reconciling meter data before it hits an invoice. AI credits are the same meter-to-cash problem, just with tokens instead of kWh.
A few lessons from energy billing I’d love your take on:
1. Data validation before billing. Utilities validate and estimate reads before invoicing (missing, duplicate, or late data). How does Clocknext handle late or duplicate usage events from async agent runs?
2. Wallet hits zero mid-run. Prepaid meters have “emergency credit” so supply doesn’t cut mid-use. Do you support a grace buffer, or is it a hard stop?
3. Tariff versioning. When provider costs change, can a new price take effect from a set date while existing customers stay on old terms?
One idea: a “bill shock” alert that forecasts end-of-cycle spend for the end customer. Utilities learned that predictable bills reduce churn.
