61% of our users work in a language we do not support.
We launched in English and assumed our market was English-speaking. Then we looked at browser language settings across 900,000 sessions.
English: 39%
Spanish: 14%
Portuguese: 11%
French: 9%
German: 8%
Hindi: 7%
Other: 12%
61% of sessions came from users whose browser was set to a language we did not offer. They were using the product in English anyway, or leaving. Session length for non-English browser users was 38% shorter than for English users, and signup completion was 22% lower.
We had read the low conversion in those regions as "low interest." It was low comprehension. We localized the top 5 languages over 4 months. Signup completion in those languages rose to within 4 points of English.
What market have you written off as uninterested that is actually just reading you in their second language?
