At what point in the onboarding flow do you usually see users drop off for good?

by•

We keep tweaking our signup steps to make it frictionless, but I'm starting to think a smoother form doesn't solve the core issue. People breeze through the steps and then never touch the core feature.

It feels like we're optimizing for the wrong metric if they aren't reaching that first "aha!" moment quickly enough.

For other builders: where did your biggest drop-off happen, and what specific change finally got them past it?

For me the form was never the problem either. In one ad cohort, 12 of 20 people made their first song within a minute or two of signing up, so the first aha came fast. The cliff was right after it: nobody made a second song. The other drop I found was on the web: one user played the 45 second preview twice, never tapped the store badge under it, and then wrote to support that she hadn't received her free song. The full song was waiting for her in the app. I don't have a proven fix for either yet, but it moved the number I watch from signup completion to the second song.
