If you were to lose your job right now, what would you do?

I should probably start Monday more optimistically, but let's take it as a little creative exercise. 😅

I see people on Reddit complaining that jobs are really hard to get. With the use of AI technologies, the situation won't be any easier.

What would your steps be if you were to lose your job right now and have to "validate" yourself on the job market again?

  • Would you go through job offers on platforms/LinkedIn?

  • Would you try asking friends (betting on connections)?

  • Would you start "drafting some prospectus for a potential company", hoping to get invited to a call?

  • Or?

I started building a personal brand for this case, too, to be more visible and to make my way easier, btw. When you have grown your personal brand/profile, people are more likely to see you as "validated person".

Omg...this same question me and few friends were doing, few days back. All are in their middle age. Few common emotions which I observe

  1. Feeling useless skills with changing world.

  2. Most thing, even if they get a new job somehow they will not be relevant after 5 years.

  3. Everyone want to do a small business which makes them basic money.

for me personally, I would like be a executive assistant not chief of staff for founders and leaders.

@divijgoyal The paradigm I see here is:
– Everybody wants to be a founder, lowering the costs with AI.

– But when everybody is a founder, there are too many products and not every product can be purchased.

– So there are people who need a job (but AI is replacing them) –> So we need new types of jobs.

– Where are new types of jobs? 😅

I would like to rephrase (Jobs to Task). Rather than doing a job and making $X as salary, there would be 5 hours task which will give people $X/30. From job economy to task economy. Already happening bit by bit on platforms like fiver.

Nika

@divijgoyal yeah, but I think it will be very limited – still cannot cover the full salary.

@busmark_w_nika Not now but it might. Lot to be unpacked. One way to think is...decentralisation and centralisation happens at same time. For example in coding world, its get more centralised where community management is getting more decentralised. So going forward communities might get smaller which means more need to community managers.

If AI provides amazing support, replacing most support executives then there would be a premium pie of customers who will need super premium, concierge type of support. So companies might be hiring more premium support executives who can give concierge services not the mass support executives. These premium concierge function might operate as support as well as consumer research executive.

if frontline medical assistance gets replaced with AI then more people will get getting medical assistant that means more prescription being written, more medicines being recommended, more sales for Pharma companies and more manufacturing/R&D spend by Pharma companies, more employment by big pharma.

Just thinking :)

Honestly, it’s a bit of Russian roulette. If you lose your job, you might find a new one very quickly, or it could literally take years.

But if you’re asking me for concrete steps, then every possible channel:

1/ Friends/contacts

2/ Social media post saying I’m looking for a job

3/ Searching on sites like LinkedIn/local platforms

4/ Reaching out to a recruiter to look for me

5/ Applying on Upwork/Fiverr/Contra, etc.

6/ Attending professional events in my field

Nika

@byalexai That's the thing – I had seen profiles where they were searching for a job for 1.5 years. And imagine someone who is 50. It is harder to find a job at that age.

For me, my plan would be to get a good night's sleep, then take a day or two off to think things through. Then I'd dust off my resume and reach out to contacts. It's always better to apply to places when you have an in, rather than trying to send out applications cold.
Nika

@tmtabor That's true, but usually, then I am hesitant whether my place was secured by my abilities or just connections.

Honestly, I’d start with my network first, people who know me already. Then I’d polish my LinkedIn/profile to show proof of work and make sure I’m visible in the right places.

Nika

@abod_rehman Do you have enough relevant contacts/connections?

If you have this mindset: Your only as good as your last project. Then 1. you will never commit to bad projects that derail your career. 2. You will always be hireable, because you just shipped a banger project.

Nika

@sentry_co When you have the founder's mindset, you will not have a need to be hired. Smart.

@busmark_w_nika We are all founders of our own life paths. Own it 💪

Well, here I am commenting on a Tuesday 😅. I’d probably take a few weeks off first, but at the same time start applying for new jobs. I’d make some posts to stay visible—sometimes someone from your network or community might have a recommendation—but honestly, most likely I’d be open to moving abroad to explore new opportunities.

Nika

@viktorgems I used to have this mindset as well because getting a job remotely is very difficult. BTW @fmerian also shares job opportunities in forums (I think that once per month).

I will simply try to start working on branding myself while doing a part time job. Over the years i have learned that if you have shaped yourself in the tech field into a Brand then there are endless opportunities for yourself.

Nika

@sheraz_abdul_hayee The sooner you start with personal branding, the better ;)

I would realise how people saying “we are a family “ doesn’t mean anything because they’re a business and not your family. Using that, Id actually build something of my own and start building a personal brand. Alongside that Id spend more time with my ACTUAL family
Nika

@ryan_sikandar yeah, when they will be about firing off just because they do not have enough money, you need to approach them with that "we are family, remember?" mindset :D

I would still continue working on the product and soon I would give part of the money to advertising and see what the result would be. The main thing is not to give all the money to advertising because there is a possibility of failure. I try to be tactful in this matter

Nika

@ixord but in that case, you need to have some safety net :)

Foyjul Islam

@busmark_w_nika I will surely first concentrate on building my personal brand, as when I will be 35+, no company will give me job or otehr sources. So, if I have my personal brand value, I can do consultation business, mentoring, course creation, etc. As my age increase, my possibility of getting job will be decreased, but, my possibilities of creating value-driven business will increase. After all, ages bring experiences.

Nika

@foyjul_i On which channels do you build that brand?

Foyjul Islam

@busmark_w_nika I will go for IG, LinkedIn and YouTube. why? I am a Digital Marketer and content writer, and my most targeted client will be in these two platforms. Why not reddit? As it will take long time to build the solid profile karma there.

Nika

@foyjul_i I think that Reddit is a place that is trustworthy for people, probably worth investing your time. :)

Foyjul Islam

@busmark_w_nika Thanks for the suggestion.. I will keep that in mind. Though, I am giving my time in reddit..
