Utility vs daily habit Which one actually keeps a startup alive?

by•

Solving a real problem isn't always enough if the user has to consciously remember to log in every time.

We had a tool that worked brilliantly on paper but because it wasn't tied to a daily trigger people completely forgot about it after a few days.

How do you cross the line from a useful utility app into something people open every single day without thinking?

some mornings i want a short list i can finish. afternoon shows up and the rest feels urgent.

I tried the daily habit route in my song app, and the early numbers argue for utility with a good trigger instead. I added a daily bonus, 2 credits a day and 5 on the seventh, with a reminder. After about five live days: 37 claims, 30 people claimed once and never again, 7 came back for a second day. A daily claim does not create a reason to make a second song, and songs are not a daily need. What fits the product better is the real trigger, birthdays and anniversaries: the app keeps the dates of the people you make songs for and reminds you three days before and on the day, at 10:00 your time. So my answer: do not force daily, find the moment the need naturally comes back and be there exactly then.
