Everyday, we are undoubtedly evolving as tech-enthusiasts and I believe social media is going to be a huge disruption in our lives. Do you think technologies like AI, VR, Metaverse would greatly influence the upcoming dimensions of social media. Would love to hear your perspective on what social media holds in the future?

It's linked with the future of the metaverse.

Social media in the future will likely involve more personalized experiences, increased automation, and more sophisticated analytics to track user engagement. We could also see the emergence of virtual reality platforms, where users can interact with each other in a simulated environment. Augmented reality technology can also be used to bring experiences to life, as well as enhance our current social media interactions!

Interesting topic which I suspect will be revisited in the near future. Many great answers thus far in this thread. My take is that social media are more about creating content nowadays that making connections. TikTok identifies for instance as an entertainment platform where social strategies are being formed. Algorithms are calibrated to drive engagement by distributing content. To that effect, I believe that content creators will greatly increase in demand in the near future (already happening. As someone already mentioned earlier, AR is also going to be important as it will introduce more live experiences (live blogs interconnected with real life interactions in real time) thus further expanding live experiences. Naturally VR is also going to find a place as well, given the support for Metaverse and Web3 initiatives.

Over a long enough time horizon VR and the Metaverse should have some role to play, it's tech that is not going away. To what degree they integrate with online socialising, I'm not so sure, but a new version of second life ain't going to cut it. For Twitter & LI, AI is already here. With all the content writing tools that use GPT-3, social media is slowly becoming flooded with that content.

I think we should ask a fundamental question first before forming a solution and predicting what tech can do for social media or networks. 1. Do people really use social for personal connections or ways to monetize? It has shifted since the first company paid influencers to sell. Same as linked in, filled with sales calls from strangers. 2. When you do use it for social, who do you really care to connect and what is the value you expect from that connection? If it's just going to be another tool to "connect" with strangers you will NEVER see in person and have a real-life interaction to share the highs and lows, then is it really social? 3. Do you really care to know someone or just want to troll and stir up spicy conversations to entertain your time as a result of losing real hobbies? My turn to answer first: 1. For sure it's business. I call my friends and go to lunches or come over to eat good steak I grill. 2. I don't. If I happen to check my computer where my business linked in and Instagram are located (not on my phone anymore), and I want to know the person, I tell them to reach out on my phone so we can talk. I don't like commenting and reading texts. 3. I do that's why I don't use social apps to socialize.

It feels like social is getting more and more varied. You have the traditional connect with friends and family (Facebook, Instagram), then there's connect with the world (Twitter, Discord), and then things like TikTok that are almost like little media agencies. If the TikTok model wins out, it will be more about showcasing influencers, and less about connecting with people you know. Curious which model will win out in VR. My bet is on TikTok/media.

In the future social media will play a major role in our daily life. Maybe marketing is only done on social media platforms.
