Where can you find ideas for topics on Product Hunt?

I sometimes get questions on LinkedIn from people who come from Product Hunt:

"What should I post about so that my thread is approve / featured?"

"I want to be more visible, so I need to contribute. About what?"

Apart from the fact that posts should comply with the community guidelines, I don't have an exact answer.

But I can share where I come up with topics:

  1. I react to the latest events (I follow TechCrunch, Social Media Today, Hacker News, Twitter)

  2. I discuss my own problems (which arise from building and my work in marketing)

  3. I react to topics that have already been discussed here in the past – try also looking at the discussion history

  4. I comment on products that was launched here

So far, I haven't messed anything up with this approach.

Maybe the question is:

What topics do you find easiest to write about in the tech space?

(We can brainstorm ways to make your post more publishable.)

This is a useful checklist. I'd add watching waht questions repeat in Slack or Discord communities you're part of. If people keep asking the same thing, that's basically a topic handed to you. Nika, does tend to write more personal stories or industry commentary?

I usually discuss things that genuinely interest me as a maker. I don’t go too deep into tech - it’s more about the maker’s routine, challenges, and everyday experience.

 What Slack + Discord communities are you a part?

The threads that work for me are the ones where I have a number nobody else can look up. Not an opinion about pricing, the actual 12x cost gap between two actions inside my own product. People scroll past a take and they'll argue with a number, and the argument is the thread. Downside is I can write maybe two of those a month, and the rest of the time I've got nothing worth posting, which I've decided is fine.

 What is the use of PH for you? Like what is your motivation to be here every single day.

 Cheap user research, mostly. Three people here told me my credit pricing made no sense before I'd written a line of the billing code, and that saved me a rewrite. The upvotes I care a lot less about. If I stopped getting useful pushback I'd stop showing up.

For me, the key is to really be curious.

I always create threads about things that are genuinely interesting to me and that I actually want to discuss.
I think that if a thread exists only to get the “active member” checkmark, it doesn’t really make sense.

So my advice would be: post when you’re genuinely interested in something. Not for self-promotion, not for product promotion, and definitely not for sales.

And yes, I’ve never had a thread approved in p/general =D Only in my safe place - p/runevr.

I’d also love to have a thread in p/AMA, but I think there are some specific rules for that? From what I understand, AMA is meant for official conversations with notable guests, so maybe I’m not quite there yet =DDD

 I think that p/AMA was specifically only for invited people :D

By the way, have you been a copywriter before? Because you really know how to work with text :)

I’ve just worked a lot with scripts and scenarios, so maybe that left some influence.

 I think that it influenced the way you write, it is a good story telling :)
