I want to stop "we can't give feedback at this time" from ever being sent again.

Hi everyone, I'm Simon and I am trying to build a solution in hiring that isn't just another AI layer slapped on top of a broken system. What's more is I am building extremely in public and trying to see what is possible in 100 hours with all the tools that are now available plus my experience with building products.

I don't know if it's possible, but I'm going to give it a go! 😂

I've hired teams, worked with recruiters, and most recently been a candidate - each time frustrated that hiring is always a pain. So I decided to try and do something, starting from my biggest pet peeve - "Due to the number of applications, we cannot give feedback at this time" - with all the advances made in hiring tech, we still can't do this? Plus speaking with businesses and recruiters to try and improve the problems they face too.

One other key thing I am trying to stop is having to fill the same information in time and time again on platforms like LinkedIn, and making it clear up front where there is a misalignement with key requirements (location/salary/hybrid working/other cultural issues). Basically, can we make the application process easier?

Although I don't want to create another "universal standard" - ala the XKCD comic - the hiring process is so flawed the best way I can see stopping rubbish outputs is to try to create better inputs (prioritising skills over text); and make it easy to do so.

After much going back and forth I called the product Profolia - Professional + Portfolios (but using the less common and potentially gramatically incorrect plural portfolia to get a domain!)

I'm currently 35 hours into my 100 hour timeline and I have:

  • Set up the blog to track and show the progress (https://prf.la/blog)

  • Defined the project plan and key functionality

  • Gotten feedback from a group of candidates, recruiter, and a start up leader

  • Implemented the sign-in/onboarding flow (using a product I built for my consultancy to speed up the general admin/core functionality)

  • Got the holding page and waitlist up (https://www.profolia.io)

  • Built my first piece of marketing - The campaign for better marketing (https://prf.la/campaign)

  • Implemented a custom link shortener (as you can see from the link above) - again using a product I built for my consultancy

  • Created the first version of the extraction logic to turn the description into skills.

Still more to go, but I'm optimistic as we all should be when building a product!

When I build things, I try to build them to solve a problem not capitalise on current hype, so question for you all.

What issues have you had finding, or hiring for, a job?
