I am not sold on it. It feels more like an editorial/magazine presentation than what I love about PH: a quick feed of new content. Too much focus on large header images and not enough on the actual products. The carousel is going to bury everything past the top 5.
As an alternative suggestion, what about keeping the content vertical but dividing it into 4 quadrants, so Games/Podcasts/etc still get more emphasis.
whoa....emoji URL! 😻
I echo other sentiments about the carousel (I prefer to scan vertically vs. horizontally, and I want to see more than just the top 5 at a glance!), but I'm also going to give it a shot and see how it feels first :) It definitely ups the homepage game, visually speaking!

@rrhoover the new site isn't handling the hero images well on retina Macbook Pros. Just wanted to let you know. Might have to ask submitters for higher res images. Don't want your great new design to be downgraded by bad assets.
Congrats on birthday! Design is nice, but usability, on my opinion, is lost :(
Don't want to ruin the celebration and I rarely post critics, but I find new horizontal browsing/scrolling much more unusable. The list is a list for a reason and horizontal top just doesn't make sense to me. Now when i open home page I have no idea how to read it, my first focus is on 2nd and 3rd item and not 1st. And i need to keep moving my head left to right in zig-zag to go through content.
If you wanted to show all the categories in same page, why wouldn't you just use columns like PandaApp or LaunchFeed.
Scrolling horizontally all these rows just doesn't feel natural and right.
Thanks for keeping old layout in /tech though.
I think it looks great, @rrhoover. Definitely challenging to introduce such a big change like this - look at all the hate get everytime Facebook changes something. But, change is necessary for survival and growth, and I think sometimes you need to drag your users along kicking and screaming.
The new layout definitely changes the dynamic of being hunted, and creates all sorts of opportunities for customising the look and feel of the site based on my preferences. Can't wait to see how it pans out in the long term!
These are awesome and important changes - Product Hunt needs to become a billion dollar company somehow! However, in it's current state I think there's an overwhelming amount of information and I can't pay attention or focus on any one thing. I also wish there was a way to collapse the giant carousel at the top of the page, it just takes up so much of my window.
I'm looking forward to the homepage being customizable, for example I don't care about games at all, but I would love to see more books and a podcast on occasion. The tech category will most likely always be the main reason I go to Product Hunt because of FOMO (I don't want to miss a new launch or not be the first to hear about something cool). If a book or podcast is new to me, it still has a ton of value, it just doesn't bring the same excitement. Anyways, really great work and I can't wait to see the next big change!
