Product Hunt's in-site messenger lets you chat with your fellow makers and friends across the community. While simple, Chat is quite robust. You can start a:

- Private 1-on-1 chat

- Private group chat

- Public group chat

It's often said that every social network eventually adds messaging... 😉 This is one of the most commonly requested features over the years, as we've seen people in the Product Hunt community often sharing emails in the comments to move a conversation to someplace private. We've been beta testing this for about a month while @vesln has been adding features and improvements based on everyone's feedback (thanks!). You can chat with people private 1-on-1 or in a group. You can also start a public group chat, which we hope will be particularly useful for makers to create a super lightweight chat room to gather feedback and build community with their audience. Please share your feedback here or hit the "Message" link below this comment to start chatting with me privately. 😊 P.S. Chat isn't available in the mobile app just yet!

@vesln @rrhoover woot woot! 🙌 Congrats on the launch Ryan and PH team! - What where the main reasons / triggers that made want to build a chat? - Does it have any unique features that other chats don't have? - What's your chat stack? I see GraphQL queries… any off the shelf 3rd party solutions running behind the scenes? Or did you guys develop everything from scratch?

@ksaitor good Q's! There are a couple reasons why we built this now: 1. Product Hunt has matured as a community and "social network" of sorts. We want to double down on this and give people more opportunities to connect and collaborate. Chat is key for this. 2. We're working on some other big projects that will benefit from Chat. Here's one of them, currently in private beta. 😉 As for the technical implementation, I'll let @vesln chime in.

@itsthisjustin much-needed feature for sure. Re: your concern around spam, about half of the development work went into anti-harassment/spam and user privacy controls. As I shared in the blog post announcement, we invested in tooling to give users the ability to: 1. Report chats. If someone is sending unwanted messages, reporting will notify our team and close the chat. 2. Adjust Chat settings. In your settings, choose whether you’re open to messages from everyone, only people your follow, or nobody. 3. Manage inboxes. You’ll find an “other” inbox, similar to what Facebook Messenger and other communication apps provide, to filter potentially unwanted chats. We also have many throttles and checks behind-the-scenes to automatically detect and prevent potential abuse. Would love feedback/ideas on this topic, especially once you have more time to play around with it. 😊

So happy to see Product Hunt Chat live today, congrats on launching Product Hunt team 👏 With private convs, private and public groups, everyone can find his use of Chat 👍 What I appreciate is the fact that you took the time to implement anti-harassment and reporting tools even if it means to delay the launch 🙏 I am old enough on PH to remember the Direct Messaging feature from back in 2015 :D I have one question, Is the cat lovers a public group? 😸

I love to see how the Makers space is evolving 😻 Sharing Goals in the community has been extremely helpful for me during the last months. I got a lot of feedback, new ideas and recommendations, as well as found people sharing similar interests or working on the same challenges as I do, so chat feels like a very necessary next step to facilitate more collaboration. 🙌🏻 I feel like we would see more and more stories like 'I've met my co-founder on Product Hunt' very soon. 😸 And yes, can't wait for mobile version!

Been lucky to have tested this before it was launched. I feel it's going to be a great place to allow people to get more consistent feedback and to socialize further than just a few snarky comments here and there. Especially now that the PH's index page is super crowded. We'll finally see who are the super-community users!

Great addition to PH, Ryan. Chat brings a more devoted sense of community to the network. Interacting with a creator/founder by commenting on their product/feature page is one thing, but the ability to connect with them 1-on-1 is super valuable. Also, love the idea of being able to form a public chat group around a new product or feature launch. Instead of posting your thoughts into the ether, you now have a forum to be more conversational about it. Two digital thumbs up.
