love the update. I've used the new browser extension more than the producthunt website. Something about seeing a screenshot of the hunted page really adds to the experience and draws me to it more.
@rrhoover any thoughts on adding pictures to the producthunt.com?
@alancassinelli funny, @sarahintampa just asked me about this. 😃
We're exploring a visual presentation of Product Hunt right now, which is particularly important for certain categories of products like games or entertainment. That said, we want to ensure it doesn't disrupt what's working right now (the scannability and hierarchy of each day's list of products).
Let me know if you have any ideas or examples of other sites that do this well!
Nice one! I remember when this launched and you commented somewhere that you were a bit wary of it because it had the potential to take users off of your platform. And this was before the API existed, as I recall, so I think Andreas was just scraping the site directly. I didn't realise that the maker had since joined your team. That's pretty cool.
This has been my New Tab extension ever since it came out. Not only does it nicely hide the sketchy website I've recently visited (thanks Chrome!) when I open a new tab, but it also gives me a great visual representation of what's been hunted.
I've always found parsing the PH list format a bit difficult (even though I know it tests way better with most users), but generally I can tell at a glance in the grid layout, with the website screenshot, whether something is likely to be something I'm interested in
Love the addition of the ability to comment directly on projects from within the new tab - this was a real pain before, particularly when projects didn't have existing comments (there was no direct link to the item on PH in that case, I believe)

With regard to the new tab portion... I guess I don't understand the "new tab" wave of products... I get it from the maker perspective of course; drive as many people to the product as possible, as often as possible.
As a consumer, this is very close to just having my tab open straight to the site.
I open a ton of new tabs throughout most days. The idea to me is a very quick glance at something interesting/useful while. I'd almost prefer every new tab open to a PH layout that is focusing on one startup at a time
Otherwise, good stuff
I would love to use it, but I use a start page new tab that already has all of my most used links, calendar and rss feeds. However I'd love to have the all of the other features. Maybe make the new tab optional in a future release?
Looks good, like the grid pattern as well. Its a great looking product, I just can't use just the parts I want.
@sacbookreviewer you can actually disable the new tab display (and the PH bar) in the Chrome extension settings. Go to window > extension > options for Product Hunt.
@rrhoover Ah perfect. I added it and then Chrome warned me it was overriding my existing new tab so I disabled it wo checking the settings.
Thank you very much.
@rrhoover interesting issue now. I disabled the new tab, and was working throughout the day with my regular tab no problem. But now when I try and open a new tab, I get the PH title, but a blank page. Checked the settings and new tab is still disabled. Did you guys change something since this morning?
This is awesome @rrhoover Quick thought: Instead of having PH in the category "News & Weather" would it make more sense to label "Social & Communication" similar to Hacker News sidebar?
@stvmcg we debated which category made most sense. To be honest, it's a combination of both but we felt that news was most relevant to people as we still limit commenting/posting to invited community members.
You had me at the menu bar.... the new tab is the true productivity killer (in the best way).

Product Hunter has been my primary (prob 95%+) mode of PH consumption for the past year. Total game changer in terms of ability to keep up w content volume as the community has grown. This is a major and much appreciated update. Thanks for the hard work @andreasklinger@rrhoover and co!

This is great. The search functionality is helpful and fast.
I didn't have the old version but just installed now, and I'm thinking I'll use it often.
The new layout was rolled automatically today for me and I love it. I was a bit annoyed to have to click the comments to get to the corresponding PH page and upvote/add to collection. Now it's possible directly from the tab. Thanks !
