Wanted to throttle our drummer so built an app to save him from me.
As a musician and sound engineer I'm fairly used to everyone under the sun having an opinion on what sounds good and what sounds bad. Some might even say that's one of the joys of music production; writing songs with your friends, playing and recording them, discussing what could be changed. Those people are usually not the ones who have to make the changes and in my experience they usually have very little understanding of the amount of work involved to make those "minor tweaks". But there was also an added layer of joy, because all of this useful feedback was usually spread over a 2 week Whatsapp chat, peppered with multiple different mixes and masters of the same song.
After recovering from a bout of scrolling induced vertigo and telling our drummer that this latest mix does not need reducing by 0.5dB at 5kHz (and I would only do it if he could spell the word "Decibel"), I decided to lock myself away in a padded room and build something that would make my life easier and also save the life of a drummer. He could drum to a click-track and was therefore a rare breed and worth saving.
I've called the system MixMatch and it's at www.mix-match.io . You can A/B mixes, analyse the audio, see how close it is to other music in that genre and apply recommended EQ and loudness changes with one click. You can also apply the EQ curve and loudness profile of a selected track, onto your own track. With it being functional on mobile it means you're not rooted to the studio either, so you can see how music translates onto different systems, like your car speakers. It's not meant to replace mastering engineers, but it can get music to a better, more professional balance, quickly and cost effectively, which is what a lot of amateur musicians and artists need. You can also get bandmates to collaborate and put timestamped comments on the waveform, which has saved me from Whatsapp scrolling. There's also a feature on it where you can invite fans, friends, and family to vote on your alternative mixes, which is useful when deciding which track version to release.
I'm still at testing stage with it and once I'm happy with it I'll likely wrap it up so it can go on the app stores, but for now it's just at that domain. Any constructive feedback is much appreciated. It's just me building this so any advice from more experienced SaaS makers is very welcome.
Thanks
Steve
