Wow this is so awesome! I have been looking for a product like this for a long time. I am going to buy this asap. Thank you! Can't wait to try it!
Ah-maze-ing! I absolutely love it! If it weren't for the cost being product + subscription, I would have bought it yesterday. Unfortunately, I'll never get the chance to use it since I can't see subscribing in addition to purchasing the physical product. Product = Big Win! Subscription model = FAIL! IMHO...
@kesslerio I just don't buy on impulse (I get that many do); plus, I see that I wouldn't get one until 2018. But at the price you mentioned above, I would put it on my 'to buy' list and save up for it, definitely! Might take a couple of months to save for that one time purchase...although I'm sure it would be worth it. If you have to do the monthly, no, I wouldn't save up to buy the device.
@thephilbenham So we just changed the 5-year plan to lifetime. We definitely have lovers and haters for both models, so it's really best to give everyone the choice. If you had the choice to lock in pricing now with a $99 reservation deposit, would that be more impulse-worthy? 😉
@evankimbrell Hey Evan, fair point. I won't lie to you if we would have a choice we'd rather announce ShapeScale to the world right when we are able to ship.
But we are also not Apple. We have to meet certain minimum order quantities prior to shipping with our OEM to buy components at scale and build the right tooling ahead of time. It's a process that easily takes between 6-9 months.
But that is also why we give a great deal to early birds at $299 ($199 for PH) instead of $499. Hope that makes sense!
@famouslabs Hi Ev, that's a good remark and we spent a lot of time thinking about it. First sensors algorithm and processing are not at that level yet. It will take another 3 to 5 years. You will still need somebody to rotate around you 2 to 3 times to get a complete photorealistic scans. It is simply something you won't be able to do alone, that's why we made a robot that does it for you ;) But yes we will enable you to use your phone for it in the future, you will still need the software to show you those insights.
@munsonbh We actually have gotten this comment from quite a few folks. Some even would like to 3D print their kids. 😉

@kesslerio I sure don't want to watch myself age! For the kids, I would want a "lifetime" purchase tier that includes the device and way-way-way more privacy.
@munsonbh Haha, I completely understand! We have now changed the 5-year tier to a lifetime tier. In terms of privacy, we frankly have no interest in scans of your kids. Generally Shape employees won't be able to view any individual scans. What's more, we will only (optionally) collect anonymized data in aggregate on the fitness tracking scans to improve the body model algorithms that are needed to realign scans for posture etc. Freestyle scans and generally any scans from someone underaged will have complete privacy as they do not really help us to make the service better. In terms of security, we will be on par with any other cloud storage solution's best practices such as encrypting all data in motion.

I think this is a very cool idea! It's like you can create a visual diary of your body, and also preserves it for the future (look how I looke when I was 25!). I can see people using it.
I also noticed that this is simply just a concept, and from a technical point of view I believe there is not a prototype yet.
Because you make the scanner turn around the user, and if you would have made a prototype that worked you probably found the flaw of having the camera turning around the center. It's makes the scanner prone for damages (hitting things, wearing out because it is hinged outwards), and you probably need quite some space for it to do a full circle.
I believe that if you simply make the user turn around in the center, you can still get a full 3d-body scan right?
Now the scanner is mounted stationary, and you probably need a much smaller motor to make the whole body spin since all the weight is dead-center on the axis of rotation. Besides to that you need less space because you don't swing things around anymore, so you can do it inside in a smaller space. Plus you have more control over the lighting conditions because now the body is equally lit from one point, because now the camera scans your back and faces the light.
Keep it up! looks great!

I see it as a super useful tool for online shopping matching your actual clothing sizes! Finally!
@unclejessy4real Hi Clayton, yes we are in talks with couple of apparel manufacturers. Would love to hear your thoughts, can you reach out to us using the button at the bottom of https://shapescale.com/company.html
