Snap Art - Snap's augmented reality platform

by

Snapchat is launching an augmented reality platform that allows people to pin art in specific locations so other users can see it. Arts can apply to have their art featured on the platform.

This is just part of Snaps' grand plan for AR/VR - I'm excited to see where this goes!

Pros:

It's a new and creative approach to social AR

Cons:

At least initially, it's only available to people that live in dense metro areas

Very excited for this — seems non-coincidental that it is timed so closely to Oculus Connect, where Facebook will likely announce more Facebook Spaces products. Art is a quiet predictor and shared art instillations represent a broader trend of virtual spaces that blend with the real world. World Lenses were merely naturalizing AR, and Snapchat Art will drill-deeper into this paradigm by bridging art with the real world. This is where Spiegel and Snapchat exceeds. Snap might normalize virtual spaces before Facebook — excited to learn more about both. As Josh Constine points out, Snapchat Art may also become a new viral growth opportunity like Pokemon Go.

I think this implementation is too easy like for Snap)

@multique from an iOS perspective, this is literally ARKit + CoreLocation + a 3D model of an "art" piece. Someone could bang this out in a few hours.

Cons:

are they preapproved so the art is not terrible

Awesome product launch, but still not sure how this going to help with Snap's growth problem. Seems like a fun feature, but I don't think it will be enough to put Snap's DAU above Instagrams. I think the angle here might be to tie this to brand sponsorships. I could see Coca-Cola or Walmart AR landmarks popping up around town in the coming months. The increased revenue will most definitely help the Snap's share price.

Ive played with it just now and its great. Next level geofilters. People posting snaps of the art to snapmap soon - pulling other people to the same location. I can see the potential. Saw the piece in Toronto and in Central Park from the UK .... using some trickery

What i like about such products is that we don't need any special glasses, your smartphone is all you need.

Pros:

very similar to RV platform from Facebook, but still has some peculiarities

Cons:

needed some time to understand how it works

Zombie-walking, Pokemon-Go Style, Awesomeness. If only Spectacles were integrated and lenses could “see” it on our faces..

I can’t wait to try that 😱 AR experiences are going to be better and better and more diverse and Snap Art is an example, bringing virtual to the real world with art 👍 And like many others, I am thinking AR glasses are on the way to have an even better experience ! Spectacles 2.0 😎

Without real prectical application, like IKEA's concept for example, AR seesms to be a "one-day" stuff
