Snapchat is launching an augmented reality platform that allows people to pin art in specific locations so other users can see it. Arts can apply to have their art featured on the platform.

Snapchat is really bad at making things that are hard to copy. Someone could literally make an AR/geo-located "art gallery" tomorrow using ARKit and ARCore, roll it out to more people and have a faster roll out than Snapchat will with installations. As for the idea itself, I don't really get how this helps Snapchat beyond being "neat" little easter egg for a few minutes like their filters are. Snapchat as a product seems to be getting more and more trite and vapid with every new release they come up with.

I love that it is localized AR, but I wonder if the orientation/lighting are synchronized between multiple users - or as Koons says "thousands". That would be really impressive.
Not seeing any mention of when they're opening this up to advertisers? Has there been any word on this?
Tiny critique from a NYer - example showing this @ Sheep's Meadow, but map is showing that it's located at Bethesda Fountain
Is there that large of a radius where these can be viewed?
Pretty clearly an experiment to prepare for branded experiences, looking forward to their Cimagine Media acquisition coming into play. AR marketing is a massive opportunity, and most of their moves seem to be leading in that direction (Zelnly, Placed, etc). Just need to get people closer toward opening Snap without a specific creation in mind, and instead being in a "discovery" frame of mind.
