I added social competition to an anti-social-media app. It worked (so far).
Hey PH! Piyush here, solo builder of Stroll (steps to screen time: you walk, you earn minutes for the apps you scroll too much).
A few weeks ago we shipped the thing I was most scared to build: a global step leaderboard.
The tension was obvious. Stroll exists to help people scroll less, and social features are the #1 reason apps are hard to put down. So we designed it around one rule: rank the walking, never the scrolling.
100% opt-in. You never appear until you choose to join
Leave anytime, and your leaderboard data is deleted instantly
No push about your rank, ever. Exactly one notification: if you made yesterday's global top 3
It's been live for a few weeks. Some honest early numbers:
Walkers from 10+ countries have joined
The top 3 spans India, the US, and Austria
Still early, and the top spots are very much up for grabs
Questions for this community:
If you use a screen time app, would a leaderboard make you more or less likely to keep using it?
Where's the line between "motivating competition" and "another feed to check"?
Challenge a friend is also live: dare someone to beat your daily steps. Happy to answer anything about the design decisions, the tech, or the numbers.
