I built a website that brings back old-school channel surfing. What channels should it have?

by

Hi all,
I am working on OldSchoolTV, an interactive web application which recreates the experience of channel surfing on the internet!

My inspiration comes from the current experience of using streaming services: opening Netflix/YouTube, spending ages trying to decide what to watch, and ultimately just leaving the browser tab open without watching anything. I miss the good old days when watching TV involved simply switching the channel.

This is why in OldSchoolTV you can just jump straight into retro style channel surfing and start watching.

Here are my goals with the platform:

  • always on channel surfing experience

  • the good ol' days feel

  • easy background TV watching

  • reduced decision fatigue

  • fun and nostalgia

I am currently working on defining the types of channels which people would actually be interested in viewing. Here are a few examples so far:

  • cartoon classics

  • lofi / chill channels

  • documentaries

  • old commercials

  • late-night shows

  • VHS/public access

Your genuine thoughts would be very appreciated:

  • Does the idea seem interesting or practical?

  • What type of channels would bring you back?

  • What features will recreate the old-school TV experience?

What would you tune in to first?
