Is Product Hunt still for the "garage" indie maker, or is it dominated by big corps?

by

I’m getting ready for my first-ever product launch, and I’ll be honest, I’m feeling like the ultimate underdog. I’m a 50-year-old Realtor from the Canadian Prairies, and looking at some of these launch teams with their massive marketing budgets and VC backing is a little intimidating.

I built this solution because I had a problem I needed to solve: my own doomscrolling habit. Since I don't have a technical background, I used AI as my "expert partner" to help me navigate the roadmap and bridge the gaps I didn't even know I had.

But now that I'm at the starting line, I have to ask: Can a solo, non-tech founder still rank well here? Or has the platform shifted to favor the big players with the huge email lists?

I’d love to hear from other indie makers—how do you compete when you don't have a marketing department? Is the "Maker's Story" still enough to get people to pay attention?

This resonates so much...I've launched a few times on PH (one was product of the day) and the key was relentless outreach. No big budget required...your maker story as a non-tech solo founder using AI is exactly what gets attention. Indie makers absolutely still crush it here!

If you're up for it, I'm launching The Sponge on PH soon...an AI-powered flashcard app that turns webpages into study material with spaced repetition. Would appreciate a follow (see 'PRODUCT HUNT LAUNCH' link in my profile).

@rianbrob Absolutely up for it. Sounds like a cool project. I look forward to following along.

@rianbrob Woah product of the day, congrats! But how did you do it? what exactly is "relentless outreach"?

Rhonda Lavoie

@rianbrob  @zhao_yi1 These are great questions Zhao yi! I also would like to know....especially right now! Paced has launched, I do love it if you took a minute to check it out.

@rianbrob  @rhonda_lavoie Yo thats cool, but is it more targeted towards the school children (or parental control?) or to working adults tho?

Rhonda Lavoie

@rianbrob  @zhao_yi1 Great question! It’s definitely targeted toward working adults and professionals.

Most apps in this space are basically "parental controls" for yourself—they treat you like a kid by locking you out. I built Paced because I’m a 50-year-old professional and I don't want to be "punished" by my phone; I want a partner.

It’s for people who love their tech but want to snap out of that "autopilot" scroll trance and make a conscious choice to get back to their lives (and maybe get some steps in while they're at it!).

Still indie. I'm a solo dev building a consumer safety app that tracks food, product, and vehicle recalls across 13

countries. No co-founder, no funding, no marketing team. Just me and a lot of cron jobs.

The thing that surprised me about PH is that the community side is real. The discussions, the feedback, the makers helping each other. That's not something a big budget can buy, and it's honestly been the most valuable part so far.

Your story as a non-technical founder who built something to solve her own problem is exactly the kind of thing that

resonates here. People connect with the "why," not the headcount. Ship it and tell the story honestly.

Rhonda Lavoie
@maliikb thank you. That is so great to hear. Gives me hope.
Rhonda Lavoie

@maliikb Well today is the day! Paced has launched! I'd love it if you would take a minute to check it out!

Maliik

@rhonda_lavoie Congrats on getting it live! 30% daily usage is a strong signal this early. That "emergency unlock breaks your streak" mechanic is a nice bit of behavioral design too, gives people a reason to choose the walk even when they don't feel like it. Good luck today!

Rhonda Lavoie

@maliikb Thank you you for taking a look. I really appreciate it.

Maliik

@rhonda_lavoie Of course! Best of luck with the launch.

Another underdog here! 42 years old changing career after 22 years working in advertising. Never before wrote a single line of code, now about to finish my first web app. So, this same doubt has been on the back of my head since I started building this thing 3 months ago, but at the end of the day, I think there's no other way to know for sure than to give it a shot, right?

All the best for your project, Rhonda! from one underdog to another.

Rhonda Lavoie

@rickcuella well today is the day for me. I guess we will see how it goes! I've done the work, checked and double checked. Paced has launched.

If you don't 100% focus on the launches. I do visit Product Hunt for apps that I would like to explore or to look for alternatives to.

Being in the top launches gives you an extra boost, however long term visitors can come from proper product updates and pages.

Rhonda Lavoie

My launch is now live and I'd love it if you would take a minute to look it over and give me some real feedback. Paced Launch

feel this a lot.

Launching on Product Hunt as a small team feels way harder now. It’s not just about having a good product anymore. You’re also competing with teams that already have big audiences, polished launch plans, existing users, and way more distribution.

I still think indie makers can do well here, but PH feels less like a magic traffic source now. You probably need to build some trust and community before launch day, then use PH as one more place to get attention.

That said, I actually think a non-technical founder building something with AI is a pretty strong story. It feels way more relatable than another super polished corporate launch. The key is probably making it feel specific and real, not like marketing copy.
