What do successful Product Hunt launches have in common?
Over the past few days, I’ve been trying to understand what helped the most successful launches stand out.
In general, here’s what I noticed they tend to share:
Their Product Hunt page had at least 500 followers.
The product was in overall good condition (I mean, already had some level of reputation, really good marketing).
Many were hunted by well-established, well-known hunters on the platform.
Every comment received a response.
The visuals were strong – there was almost always a video or demo featured at the beginning of the carousel.
Our upcoming launch currently meets about 2 – 3 of these criteria. 😅
Still room for improvement.
Curious to hear your thoughts:
Have you noticed any other patterns that successful Product Hunt launches tend to have in common?

for big name launches, their distribution outside of here helps them a lot. Especially VC backed products.
For more indie launches I've seen people with a large platform outside do well.
One thing all successful launches have in common is a clearly defined value proposition. Direct and to the point.
From AI models to consumer apps, if the value is non obvious then people don't upvote.
And the word obvious carries a lot here. It's not just "it does X" or "It solves Y," the tagline, name, description, even the logo have to explain in so little not just what the product its but the gist of how it does it.
If your tagline is "task management redefined" that tells people nothing, if it says "All your tasks in one place, smartly organized every day," that's a lot better, it implies the "how", clears up the "what", and invites you to see the who and the why.
All good launches are upfront about what they are.

@build_with_aj True – the very first grab catcher is logo + tagline with the name of the product (of course, it needs to be visible – featured, first)
Hey, Nika!
I partly agree. I wouldn’t say the follower count is that important. It does matter for products that are launching for the 2nd, 3rd, or 5th time, but for a first launch, having zero followers is completely normal. And sometimes it can still be very successful.
I’d put much more emphasis on the landing page being top-tier. It absolutely has to be very strong. I’m often surprised by how many products have a mediocre landing page, yet are convinced that anything less than Product of the Day is unacceptable, which is unrealistic.
Visuals also need to be at a very high level. I’d suggest the following:
One Idea Per Image: 1 headline → 1 promise → 1 visual proof.
Outcome-First Headlines: Focus on the result (e.g. “Reduce support tickets by 40% in one week”), not just the feature.
Focused UI: Crop screenshots to highlight a specific workflow or agent action, rather than showing the full dashboard.
Visualize the Flow: Show the steps or sequence to clearly prove “this thinks and acts.”
The hunter is a bonus. If it’s a top name, it brings huge credibility with the Product Hunt team when it comes to being featured. If not, it doesn’t really matter whether you have a hunter or not. Being featured makes a massive difference in visibility. Followers of the hunter get a notification, which automatically exposes the product to a specific audience and can easily result in dozens of upvotes, especially if the hunter has a loyal and engaged following.

@byalexai Valid point. The thing is that I observed this in the majority, but I agree that newly launched products don't have this privilege.
The rest is hugely true, and I agree esp. with that part about the website. I am afraid about our page, because it is not so good as I expected, but the dev team needs to focus on improving the app as they consider this launch as a "side activity" :D
@byalexai @busmark_w_nika Relieved by this conversation! Lol...prepping for our first launch now! Is it even possible to get followers before you launch the first time? Love that you put the draft link here, Nika! Great video (and Warrior II)! Congrats, again!

@byalexai @felicitemoorman I think that you can have followers, but you need to ask them to follow the website first :)
@byalexai @busmark_w_nika @felicitemoorman wishing you the best in your launch if you haven't.
@byalexai This needs to be framed! The only thing I don't understand is what being featured means.
great breakdown! as someone about to launch my first product on ph with almost no community, this is really helpful.
do you think a strong product with a genuine story can compete against launches with big followings? or is the community/hunter side basically required to get noticed?
minimalist phone: creating folders
@topfuelauto I think that if you want to be noticed for the first time, some previous presence can significantly help. But we do not know your story, maybe it is so convincing that people will notice the product / the product will stand out.
Building to 500 followers feels impossible when I compare it to platforms like X. I'll give it my best though!

@bradshannon It was not for their personal profiles, but for the Product profiles.
@busmark_w_nika ah gotcha. I haven't created my first product profile yet. I'm working on assets and going through the guide first.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@bradshannon Definitely, it is needed to create a product profile – you will be inviting people to follow it! :)
One thing I’d add: clarity in the first 10 seconds. The launches that stick make it instantly obvious who it’s for and why it’s different.
Even with fewer followers or a smaller hunter, clear positioning + active maker engagement seem to punch above their weight.
I somehow agree with all the points listed (unsure about the one regarding the follower count), but I believe the most important aspect is having a good distribution strategy.

@andreitudor14 It was just noticing this phenomenon, because when I had a look at their website, they usually had the number above 500. But maybe that's not the causality.
Hi, Nika.
I am preparing to launch our product hopefully soon on product hunt, but seeing this thread worries me since we are very small team with very small basis. Does your thread mean we should wait until we meet all those criteria to launch or is there a different strategy that would work better for smaller teams like us?
minimalist phone: creating folders
@june_son I think that you should prepare, but do not overengineer it so much. Because putting too much energy can also disappoint you. Regarding teams, you have some, so it is a good start. Some solo-founders here were able to get the 1st position, e.g. @said_aitmbarek with @Microlaunch :)
@june_son I certainly wouldn't wait and I don't meet any of the suggested either. I think we can make an effort to apply the best recommended practices until our launch and continue to make an effort thereafter.

@busmark_w_nika Congratulations on the launch!
Thank you for highlighting the important points. We are also planning to launch in February. Can you recommend any of the hunters?
minimalist phone: creating folders
@ponikarovskii Hey Anton, thank you. Re: Hunters – Have you tried looking at any of these? https://www.producthunt.com/p/producthunt/hunters-who-are-visible-and-active-on-product-hunt-short-list
Lovon AI therapy
@busmark_w_nika thanks a lot for the reco! I've never thought about collabing with "professional" hunters, does it really boost your launch?
minimalist phone: creating folders
@ponikarovskii It can in terms reaching their followers with notification.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@skiba Do you mean now what? That products/services that launched here weren't prepared properly on their local servers and didn't have processes in order?
minimalist phone: creating folders
@skiba aaah, sounds more like backend issues. Next time, we all need to be more prepared ;) :D
IXORD
Reputation reinforces the trust of new users, and it is difficult to launch a product when no one has heard of it.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@ixord That's why you need strong presence (at least on social media) ;)
