I understand this is trendier and better for the environment than the classic paper mask, but I still feel that I'd look a lot like Bane (the villain from Batman) if I wore a mask.
@katesegrin Hi Kate, I understand your concern! Masks are still sometimes frowned upon in the street. But think back to what happened with sunglasses for example. They started off as a protection against sun light, but today I sometimes catch myself wearing them as a fashion item on a cloudy day. And I am probably not the only one ;)
@lehrjulian@katesegrin +1 for a Darth Vader edition with included voice changer switch. Could really freak some people out with that claiming to be their fathers :-)
As an avid traveler, I can definitely see the use for this. My only concern would be how aesthetically pleasing the design would be because, as @katesegrin mentioned, you're essentially asking consumers to walk around streets wearing a Bane-like mask. Fortunately, it seems that you guys over at Airinum have kept that thought in mind and designed a pretty sweet looking facemask.
I've always considered buying one of these mask's but just never put myself to do it. What would you say is the one thing that differentiates you from your competitors?
Best of luck @johannesherr !
@haidersyed Great question! In other industries this is actually already the norm, but I would say we are one of the first companies that puts themselves in the customers shoes.
Some products in the market protect well, but you will look like a mine worker or Bane with them. Some have nicer designs, but they actually don't protect because of their poor shape or bad materials. We basically just build a mask that we like to wear while traveling or staying in polluted cities. And in our initial user testings, that makes a big difference!

Sorry but I do not believe in this product at all - a lot of marketing and no efficience on harmful particles such as PM10 - to get a protection you would need to renew the mask each hour for a new one and to make sure that it can actually filter that size of particles. You advertise 1 month ! - Would you make us a demo of the mask and breath the exhaust pipe of your diesel car for 20 minutes ? Dont get me wrong, I would be the 1st customer of such device if I believed that it would work.
@steveraffner Hi Steve! I understand your skepticism regarding the filter lifetime. First, our filter lifetime is ON AVERAGE 1 month or 200 hours. That means if you live in Beijing you likely have to change your filter more often. Second, with usage the breathability of the filter decreases but not the protection! That means that when you use a filter longer than recommended it will simply become harder to breathe through. We don't base our lifetime estimates on pure guesswork, but experiments and testing.
Thank you for hunting @jasondainter!
Really excited to be here with Airinum. For those who don’t know who we are: We aim to tackle the health effects of air pollution by developing innovative products that protect and inform about the air you are surrounded by. The Airinum urban breathing mask is a protective mask adapted to the daily life of modern city dwellers and travelers around the world.
We would love to hear your feedback and crazy ideas around our product! You can find all information on the mask on our Kickstarter page here: http://bit.ly/AIRINUM
@chrismessina we know most of the masks sold there. I couldn't get that type of masks to fit properly as they are always sliding down the neck. For Burning Man this is probably an option, but I wouldn't wear it in a city ;)
@johannesherr fair. This is the mask I've used for Burning Man. It tends to pinch my nose and make it run, which sucks! I've backed Airinum with the hopes of replacing my Playa Masks!

I'm not the one to throw on a mask, to be honest. But in the winter time here in Boston, I'd definitely rock this for sure! Great design and very affordable! Nice!
good thing most of europe and us has near-good levels of pollution! good luck to all those who travel to china & india

Thanks Johannes, I was in China and Japan recently - discussing this topic with daily users of such products. They were not that optimist. What is the price of a replacement filter on your mask ?
@steveraffner This is also why we want to get as much feedback from Kickstarter and here on Product Hunt to understand what the shortcomings of masks today are. So it's definitely good to hear from you! Our replacement filters will cost between 5-6 Euros (~ the same in $)

@johannesherr@steveraffner thanks for your answers and good luck with the product. Filtering technology should improve with time and I hope you will contribute to this improvement.
