Most alarms are a sound you silence. Fifi is a call you answer. It rings through Silent mode and a Focus — built on iOS 26 AlarmKit, so the alarm needs no network. Your Lock Screen shows an incoming call with a face and a name. Answer, and one of ten characters reads you your day: last night's note, your forecast, your headlines. An ASMR whisper, a film-noir detective, a nature doc, a drill sergeant, a pantomime baroness, a fairy godmother. 39 ringtones. A backup call. A streak.

Latency picked it, not quality. I needed a spoken briefing rendered in the seconds between an alarm firing and a half-asleep person answering, against a 10-second client abort. The alternative I benchmarked returned the same text in 19–27 seconds. Cartesia did it in about five. Nothing else in the evaluation mattered after that.

I'd already shipped a previous app on it, so the paywall, entitlement handling and post-purchase flow ported across in an afternoon — on an eight-week deadline that was close to two weeks I didn't spend. What kept it after that was original_app_user_id. My app is anonymous-auth, so the Firebase uid is per-install and useless as a spend anchor; the RevenueCat id is the thing my server checks entitlement against before it will spend money on a text-to-speech call. Honourable mention to the State of Subscription Apps dataset, which decided my trial length and my hard-paywall call more than my own instincts did.

I auditioned about eighty voices for a cast of ten characters, and my honest finding is that no single library had a castable voice for all ten. So I split the cast across two vendors by character. ElevenLabs won the ones it won on the ear, in a blind pass — which is the only way I'd pick a voice now, having learned the hard way that choosing them by reading their descriptions produces a cast that all sounds the same.

I wired it in week one, before there was a product to measure, which is the only reason I have any funnel data at all — retrofitting analytics onto a shipped app means the numbers start the day you remember, not the day it launched. Session-level conversion on a hard paywall was what I needed and what I got.

I needed a Swift native module — iOS 26's AlarmKit, which no React Native wrapper covered that I trusted — plus a Live Activity target, and the received wisdom is that both of those mean ejecting. They don't. The Expo Modules API and config plugins let me write the Swift I actually needed and keep everything else. expo-updates was the bigger surprise: shipping a JS fix without a review cycle is worth a lot when the deadline is fixed.
