If you buy the test on OneOme's website, it is not covered by insurance, but you can use your HSA to pay for it! 💵 You can also have your own doctor order the test for you, in which case, some insurance carriers provide coverage. My 2 yo daughter has a fairly severe genetic abnormality that has caused seizures (among other symptoms). I did not have any experience with epilepsy before her, and I have learned that medications for seizure treatment are largely a crap shoot. There's a list of 15-20 drugs that might or might not work. You have to try them, trial and error, over a period of years, until you find one that works. Some of the drugs have a "1 in 15,000 people die from liver failure when taking this" warning on them. And your baby is having seizures all throughout the process. Through the use of OneOme's testing, her neurologist was able to better prioritize the list of epilepsy drugs to reduce potential side effects and help us set the dose. It meant the world to us to have additional information and a way speed up her path to a stable treatment plan. In my opinion, this kind of technology can't come fast enough and has the potential to change countless lives. Now every time I hear the doctor say "Let's start with this and see how it goes - come back in two weeks" I think "This is the old way of practicing medicine. I want the new way."

I found this very helpful, despite not being on many medications currently, as it provides a lot of peace of mind to know which medications will work for me before I need them. My provider happily ordered for me, and found the results very interesting. Being a newer technology, many providers are still being brought up to speed and educating themselves; making it all the more important for patients to advocate for themselves and make this their own standard of care!

Pros:

Affordable and actionable, plus you'll have the same results for the rest of your life!

Cons:

Not all doctors are aware of the benefits of this type of genetic testing

I'm a huge fan of pharmacogenetic testing! When I took the test, I learned why I need a higher-than-normal dose of certain medications to get relief. My son's test results pointed the way to the best medication for him--prior to getting the RightMed guidance, we'd been running through trial and error treatments for years!

After you place your order, we ship your RightMed test kit to you with 2-day shipping. 📬 Once your DNA sample makes it back to our lab, it takes, on average, 4-5 business days to receive your test results. 📄 Once your results are ready, you get a consult with a genetic counselor who will go over your results with you and answer any questions you have.
