I tell young writers this all the time—just write.
You have to write every single day and you have to make it a habit. Put it out there. Make your own blog and then find a way to make yourself useful to an editor. Master something no one else has, work harder than everyone else.
I think great journalists 50 years from now will be able to write a story by blinking their eyes. All kidding aside all journalists now need to think about creating multi-media stories and doing that on your own. You need to be a one man band these days. It is hard, but it is the direction we are going.
