California already has a companion-chatbot law. Here is how to tell if your AI app is covered.
... Companion chatbot" sounds like a product category you would know if you were in it. The statutory definition is broader than that, and the duties are already live. California
SB
243 (Chapter 677, Statutes of 2025) took effect on 1 January 2026. If you ship anything conversational and emotional, it is worth reading the definition against your product instead of assuming it is about someone else. The statute defines a companion chatbot as an AI system with a natural-language ...

Apple's new age-rating question is mandatory this month. Answering "no" isn't the end of it.
... that the age rating questionnaire now includes questions about social media capabilities, and that "beginning in September 2026, responses will be required when submitting new apps or updates to the App Store, or when submitting apps for notarization for
alternative
distribution." September ends tomorrow, so if you have a build in flight, this is the week you meet it. Apple's definition is narrow: the ability to redistribute, amplify, or interact with user-generated content through a social feed ... ... discovery method. Before you tick no, open your own app and look for any place where one user's content reaches another user. The second thing is that this sits on top of a larger change. Texas

California's companion chatbot law has no small-dev exemption
... looking for whether that puts Murror inside any of the new AI-companion laws, the honest answer was: probably, and I wouldn't have guessed that a year ago. Three states have live statutes now, not proposals. California's
SB
243 was signed October 13, 2025, and its operator requirements - disclosure, safety protocols, the parts that bite - took effect January 1, 2026. New York's companion-AI law has been in effect since November 5, 2025. Tennessee's

You might already be a "companion chatbot" under the law — and not know it
... California's
SB
243 took effect this year. The definition is broader than the word "companion" sounds, and most of what it asks for is stuff a decent builder would want to ship anyway. If you're building anything where a person talks to your AI about their life a journaling tool, a coaching app, a "supportive" assistant, a character there's a law worth reading this month, and it's probably not the one you think ... ... What is your opinion on artificial intelligence companions (their harm and regulation)?
... Currently reading about the move of California: The state has become the first U.S. state to regulate AI companion chatbots . Governor Gavin Newsom signed
SB
243, a new law requiring companies like OpenAI, Meta, Character AI, and Replika to implement safety protocols protecting children and vulnerable users. Do you think this is the right move? + Should AI companion chatbots be regulated differently for adults and minors? The idea behind it seems generous, but I m not sure how effective ...
