When does adding more features actually make a product worse?

I keep running into this while building.

There s always another feature that sounds useful on its own.

Another setting.
Another metric.
Another automation.
Another smart layer.

But at some point, the product starts asking the user to understand the system instead of the system understanding the user.

Do you actually know which of your businesses made money last month?

I run more than one business, and for a long time I could not have told you, with a straight face, exactly which one was profitable in a given month. I had a general feeling, but no real number I trusted, just totals across bank accounts that never told the full story.

If you are running two or more businesses right now, do you actually know this month's numbers by business, or are you working off a general feeling too? What made you either build a real system for it, or decide it was not worth the effort yet?

Developer’s thoughts

Building something in the music space and constantly asking myself did I actually use this tool the way a real customer would? Or did I build for what I thought made sense? Curious what products you've bought recently that felt like the founder was a real user first, developer second. What tipped you off?

The part of launch prep you cannot compress

There were two clocks running on our launch and only one of them was under our control.

The product clock compresses. Working build, landing page, payments, guidelines. All of that is a checklist and you move it faster by putting more hours in. We had that side finished.

How did you know it was finally time to launch?

It's been a while since I started to realize the difference between developing the product and launching the product.

While developing, each day is productive as you add features and fix bugs.

But as launch day comes nearer, a new question starts to occupy my mind:

Please take responsibility for what you put out into the world

I can't believe the number of products posted here "anonymously."

Almost every product here is asking its users to provide some data. Even if it's just an email address. Which is obviously normal.

Why haven't browsernative, zeroidentity messaging apps replaced traditional ones?

why does signal still need my phone number? honestly wondering why disposable browser chat rooms arent the default for privacy yet. even with signal you need a sim card, telegram keeps logs, and everything is tied to google or apple stores anyway so you are never actually anonymous. browser crypto is solid enough now to do real end to end encryption without accounts, phone numbers or installs, just nuke everything when the tab closes. is it just that nobody can monetize an app without user data, or is there some technical blocker im missing?
