I give this app a year max before Google cans it. It is such a first world problem (most markets really need free texting, like Whatsapp or Messenger) and it's not really solving anything new (unlike Periscope). But I guess that's what Google does best, try many things and see what sticks.

@rfreling I disagree. People use FaceTime quite a bit. There are people who buy an iPhone just for that feature. With Duo available on both platforms, it solves a problem.

Wait, I thought google hangout was it.. so next is Google's snap chat competitor or does that exist already?

@sicnarftea How in the world is this gonna compete with SnapChat?
Report
@mohitify it's not. I am wondering if google is aiming for a Snapchat competitor for their next app.

I will surely test it but it's only available for preorder for now, I hope it will be live soon 😱
You can grab the Android apk early through ApkMirror but i haven't been able to get past verifying my phone number: http://www.apkmirror.com/apk/goo...

looks great, but I already have face time - need a better reason to install yet another app

@passingnotes it's not designed for you. It's designed for the people who don't have FaceTime primarily like Android users. It's been a tool that Apple has leveraged as a selling point. Google has just started a turf war by putting app on Apple and Android phones. The only response Apple can have is releasing FaceTime on Android, or they will lose, it's really simple.

WHY? What a waste.

Anyone else think it's strange that Duo only connects to your phone number (no option to link your gmail or google apps account)? I guess they truly see this as smartphone-to-smartphone, not computer-to-smartphone or tablet-to-smartphone. Seems like a weird shift from the ecosystem.

What is good about this is that finally we will be able to communicate between android and ios ☺

I think I have to wait a bit before I can fully enjoy this.
