Once again as always the rules of engagement are blurred on the Medium platform. Transparency is not their strong suite by a longshot

I have a lot of doubts but signed up right away. @Ev 's vision is encouraging and I'd bet on him every time.

"I've never seen ads on Medium" Right to the point: Pay $5/month or you'll see now. πŸ˜‰

Writers should pay for medium's visibility and powerful platform, not readers

I'm a paying member. I read more and more on Medium all the time. I want them to survive

Are non-journos/randos' ramblings really worth $5/month? I'm surprised they didn't charge writers and organizations for branding/CNAMEs instead. I feel like Medium is far more valuable for writers than readers.

Upon seeing the invitation, I quickly signed up. Totally agreed the media/ad model is severely broken, and am glad they are doing something different to show there is another way to build a business. It's ultimately a very similar mindset we're planning with horizonapp.co to convincing people to pay directly for the product rather than force us into an ad model.

I use medium every day, it was a no brainer for me to support them both as a reader and content maker.

@protozog @caramev I live in Canada πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ and was wondering if it is possible to bill the subscription in Canadian dollars? The price of the service seems fair; however, extras like foreign transaction fees on credit cards add up over time.

$60/year to read amateur writing (like mine) and leftist rants on Medium? No thanks. It doesn't hold enough value for me personally. Even though I have 7 publications on Medium and love to write, but there are far too many other ways to write online and read quality writing for free or without a perpetual subscription. I don't write for the exposure and audience-building, so that doesn't matter to me, and I can, and do when necessary, do that myself with self-hosted sites. Evan didn't really outline what value people get for their money, and the blog post he sent out yesterday was basic marketing the program, through and through. (Roll this out to limited numbers of people, as an "exclusive" offer, etc...please. Is anyone without a Medium account really not going to be able to pay them?)
