How will AI reshape film? (Hollywood isn't thrilled about ByteDance’s new AI tool Seedance)
A few days ago, Bytedance (which is also responsible for TikTok) announced a new model for generating videos. According to an article on Techcrunch, Hollywood isn’t happy.
Because, apparently, it’s competition.
AI is already quite well represented in audiovisual production, e.g.:
– Actors are selling AI usage rights
– AI is used in video ads for efficiency and cost
– AI-generated ads on TV & public backlash are emerging “AIBowl.”
– AI video is widely used for influencer profiles
– Some films explicitly say no AI was used
– First AI-generated movies are being made
How do you think the film industry might change with AI?
My guesses are that:
A new category could emerge at the Oscars
Platforms focused entirely on AI films may appear
AI-human collaboration in filmmaking will grow

I think the public backlash will manifest as piracy.
Hollywood is scared because they do not own the tech nor can they stop its advancement.
There will be platforms focusing solely on non generative AI used, we might see some companies attempting an AI native film catalog, I fear that may go as well as Quibi did back in the day.
There may be some acceptance but it's hard to think about.
One of the major reasons people are so against AI in film is because it is replacing the very ways people without connections or large fortunes use to try and get started. From being an extra, to working in small productions for content, commercials, short films. Working in student films, indie films.
The game was always rigged but there was a tiny chance. Now there seems to be none. As AI progresses, the financial pressure to use it for margin reasons will increase. Those who wish to make generative free films will have to either stretch the budget or rely even more on unpaid and volunteer work. But even the meager and insufficient promise of exposure isn't there anymore to lure people. Thus you will get only true volunteers. This becomes an unwitting privilege filter.
There will be discourse on the ethics of AI use as an independent film maker. The industry at large has no such qualms about it, if it is a profitable venture they will do it. Everybody knows the production of the Wizard of Oz was both a technical and cinematic marvel, and a grueling downright abusive to actors, staff, and the cruelty enacted upon Judy Garland.
In that same vein, there will be cases where AI is used in a hurtful way. I am unsure about the exact mechanism, but I foresee a lot of misuse of a person's likeness, including but not limited to making their AI representation perform scenes that they would not have consented to performing.
Regulations are written in blood and are often years behind.
I believe that major studios will look to own as much of the tech and the data as possible, perhaps even requiring every actor or performer they recruit to sign over rights to their likeness in perpetuity.
Not all is a a sea of doomerism.
Perhaps there will be creative and ethical uses of AI video, particularly in VFX, where they may choose to train a model from data which was ethically obtained, or fictional, constructed personas, virtual actors.

@build_with_aj The thing with AI is that you can do anything with it.
Do you wanna a specific persona? Create it.
Do you wanna a specific place? Ok, no problem.
Do you wanna 5 different stories to execute without extra costs? You own the prompt.
It will be a crazy era and I will be closely watching. Who knows. Maybe will try my first AI indie movie :D

I wrote more about it here: https://businessandmarketing.substack.com/p/15-ai-tools-that-will-change-the

the usual evolution will continue. There will still be
- Indie movies - less budget optimized for art and recognition
- Streaming service movies - optimized for investment/(watched movie minutes)
- Hollywood movies - optimized for whatever goes viral, so they can sell more merchandize. And I believe in 5ish years AI content will be good enough for growing generation (new audience) to go viral

@asti_pili At some point, the production will balance (human vs AI), but somehow feel that because of lower costs, many companies will try AI for movie making.
