Hi Product Hunt!  I’m happy to announce Setapp for iOS.  Currently, Setapp has over 190 apps for designers, devs, writers, and anyone who wants a more productive workflow. With its iOS counterpart, Setapp fits your busy life even better. You can start writing a note on your Mac, and then finish it up on iPhone. Create a mind map in the office, or get it done during your morning commute. Always pick up where you left off.  We’re also very happy Setapp for iOS can serve a new digital marketplace for iOS app developers. A new, fair space to monetize your software. Join in and share your feedback, we’d love to hear what you think.

Hello Hunters! We're super thrilled to announce Setapp is now available on iOS. For the last three years, we’ve been building a Mac app that has all the apps you need in it. Today, we make the next big step — something you’ve been asking for since the beginning of Setapp. We go from a desktop suite for Mac apps to a cross-platform solution. You can now install Setapp on Mac and unlock the mobile versions of its many apps on iPhone or iPad. By adding your iOS device to the Setapp account, you get access to all iOS apps available. All you have to do is scan a QR code in your desktop suite on Mac, and then unlock the app on iPhone. Right now, we have a few awesome iOS apps on board: Ulysses Taskheat MindNode Paste PDF Search SQLPro Studio And we’ll keep adding more soon! Give it a try and let us know what you think.

?makers May I ask how you achieve this at a technical level? As far as I know, the Apple Review team usually seems to be veeery picky about apps with possibilities to activate without an In-App Purchase. Do you use something similar to Associated Links that unlock functionality in the app? Is the App Store Review team ok with this kind of app unlocking?
Brad Wells
@palsch Setapp for iOS utilizes QR codes as a means for transferring links. This is not considered to unlock functionality within the app, and utilizes the device’s built-in camera. All iOS app builds that work with Setapp for iOS have undergone review by Apple for compliance with App Store Guidelines before being accepted and published on the App Store. There's more info on how it works step-by-step to unlock an app at the following link (see "Install and activate iOS apps with Setapp"): https://support.setapp.com/hc/en...

@palsch @brad_wells Do I need multiple seats for multiple iOS devices, or do they all count as one?
Seb Jachec
@palsch @brad_wells So, do you download the regular App Store build of an app then activate a Setapp subscription within the app, or does the QR code link out to a TestFlight build or something? Just trying to get my head around this 😅
Brad Wells
@palsch @marinaepelman Hi! 1 seat = 1 device. We're actually in the process of switching the terminology in the app, documentation and everywhere from using the term "seat" to "device." Subscribers can swap devices by disconnecting one and connecting another, if needed. Additional devices can be added to subscription plans for an additional fee, if no slots are available on a plan.
Paul Schwind
@brad_wells Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love the concept you are presenting here for monetizing iOS apps. I am just a bit worried that Apple might find out some day that Setapp tries to provide an alternate way to "unlock" / "activate" iOS apps and is like "No, that is not allowed per the App Store Review Guidelines 3.1.1". They even explicitly state there that unlocking features via QR codes is not allowed. I really dislike this rule, and I really hope Apple won't force it upon Setapp apps, but it seems a bit like it has the potential to stop the whole concept from working, sadly. "Apps may not use their own mechanisms to unlock content or functionality, such as license keys, augmented reality markers, QR codes, etc." https://developer.apple.com/app-... (Edit: That is assuming that it works that way and I understood everything correctly. Please correct me if I am mistaken, and there is a legitimate way to achieve this, which would be wonderful.) (Edit 2: There seems to be an exception: https://developer.apple.com/app-... )

Hey Product Hunt! We're so happy to be here. One of the main goals of Setapp is having a solution for every task, big or small. And since we’re used to solving tasks on different devices, cross-platform software is essential. As Setapp is growing, we keep adding apps that are incredibly valuable if used across devices. For me as a product manager, this became the main reason behind creating Setapp for iOS, and therefore expanding the range of solutions Setapp offers. Apart from that, Setapp for iOS can be a valuable app distribution channel for developers.
Valerie Fenske
in other words, I can subscrive to a number of apps at one price, right?
Brad Wells
@valeryfenskaya Correct! It's a flat fee for the basic subscription and you get access to all of the apps in the collection. Currently 190+ apps for Mac and 8 apps for iOS, and we're adding more every month. For new users, there's an additional fee to add more devices.

@setapp This is great news even for developers who only have a macOS app on Setapp. iOS => more users on Setapp => increased usage of macOS apps as well
Anastasiia Sulzhyk
@rampatra Yep, for sure!
Natalie Tolliday
Great stuff. I’ve been using Setapp since it was launched. Whilst there are a relatively small number of apps that have truly become part of my workflow, I can see myself using more apps on iOS. The subscription is good value as it is, hopefully I will see the ROI for the iOS seat.
Anastasiia Sulzhyk
@natalie_tolliday Natalie, thanks! It's a pleasure to know you are satisfied with the service and hope you'll enjoy using iOS apps with Setapp as well.
