Hey Product Hunt Community 👋 We’re extremely excited to share Fastgen with you today, a low-code API and workflow builder with an integrated Postgres DB. You can use it to quickly build any custom business logic, cron jobs or complete backends. At our previous company we built several internal and external facing tools and encountered how tedious it can be to create and maintain myriads of APIs/CRUD operations. Especially when building for edge cases and “what if” scenarios, and integrating with lots of third party services which receive, update and return data. With Fastgen we try to eliminate boilerplate code and make it easier to adjust and share your work in a visual environment. 🔧 API & Workflow Builder Through a drag-and-drop interface you sequence 'actions' to form REST APIs and workflows. Actions are essentially functions that perform specific tasks such as sending an HTTP request, checking for conditions or interacting with a database. 🔍 Debug Mode Directly test and debug what you build within the platform. Receive insights into the step-by-step execution of action blocks to pinpoint issues and optimize them. 📊 Logging Access logs of all requests made to your APIs and Workflow executions to understand performance and easily do maintenance. 💻 Set Up We support SQL for database operations, JSON for data structure, and comparison operators similar to JavaScript for decision-making in workflows. 🧮 Database Every project comes with a hosted Postgres DB with out of the box validation rules. For full flexibility you can both connect an external DB as well as create custom validation rules. 🏗 Devops Everything you create can be deployed instantly and will be hosted for you. There’s lots of busywork that comes with backend development which we want to remove. While some users have created backends for full MVPs with us, others use the platform to build automations for their data/operations teams. For example an API that retrieves a company’s financial filings from the SEC for a crowdfunding platform, KYC onboarding flows, a Chinese translation app using ChatGPT, a cron job that checks for the health status of all other APIs in a code base, a custom sales lead recycling process, or a sitemap checker for a SEO project. @rrhoover Simplifying the building process is exactly what we are after. We hope to see many products built with Fastgen on Product Hunt in the future. Regarding your question. Our goal with Fastgen is to make API and workflow creation as simple and intuitive as possible without compromising on the power and flexibility that developers need. Striking this balance has been a major challenge on the product side. On a more technical level, we needed to build Fastgen with the ability to scale from the very beginning. Ensuring that our DevOps setup is flexible enough but also performant and scalable was a major challenge when we started. We planned the architecture for a whole month before writing a single code line.

@jsteneros The proxy we use is that you should understand how APIs work to derive value from using Fastgen. The more technical you are, the more complex things you can build with it. Many of our users are developers, but we also have people we call "semi-technical" who cannot code but have a solid technical understanding. They are able to build very cool stuff with Fastgen and have built things they could not have built before.

@b_maurin Xano and Fastgen try to achieve similar things, but I would say that we have different approaches to how we do it. Xano is a full No-Code solution and puts a lot of effort into explaining the basic concepts behind a backend. I think they do that quite well. We operate under the assumption that our users have a basic understanding of APIs, HTTP Requests, etc., and want to find a faster, more straightforward way of building and deploying their work. Therefore, you can expect more flexibility in Fastgen but also less handholding. On top of that, Xano offers a couple of features that we do not offer yet since they have been on the market for quite a while. In contrast, I would argue that our overall UI/UX is more welcoming and a bit more modern, but I guess that is subjective to some degree so you have to be the judge. I think there is an overlap in terms of potential users but also distinct groups that would use Fastgen but never Xano and the other way around.

@davidalonso We do not have a public roadmap, but we are looking into making our planning more public. We would like people to be able to vote on feature requests. Currently, we track all feature requests internally and weigh them based on different criteria like impact, and the number of requests. All of our changelogs, including new features, are published on our website regularly. We get the Firebase request every now and then and will definitely build it at some point. However, it is not on the immediate roadmap.
