Hi everyone!
Big news for developers using AI image generation: OpenAI has now made its most advanced model, gpt-image-1, available through the Image API!
Until now, getting that top-tier image quality and instruction following, like we saw go viral with GPT-4o, was mostly limited to ChatGPT itself. The API primarily offered DALL-E 2/3. This update finally brings that advanced capability directly to developers.
Key features accessible via API:
✨ Generation: Higher fidelity, better prompt adherence, and significantly improved text rendering compared to the DALL-E API models.
🎨 Advanced Editing: Go beyond basic edits – modify images using prompts and multiple reference images, plus robust inpainting.
⚙️ Customization: Control size, quality, format (PNG/JPEG/WebP), and transparency.

@zaczuo I can't figure out the multiple image input into a single API call. Is that feature not working now?

@zaczuo Amazing feature!
Strawberry
Hmmmm should we add this to Strawberry? We're on the fence!
Awesome! ON2create is coming soon with the new gpt-image-1 and more... Also looking forward to seeing this in the Responses API, any timeframe?
Great Job Open AI!
I mean this is unreal...it's the serious next step & I look forward to using it myself - The cost isn't too bad either so quite excited to give it a few runs & make some cool images!
Well-hunted Zac!!
Shapen
The ability to edit very specific elements of an image is phenomenal. The API was super easy to integrate into Shapen. Using it to generate images, edit them precisely, and then 3D modeling them is a superpower!
Thanks for sharing this with the world. I look forward to having autonomy over my image generation!
