🎨 Do solo makers need a UI/UX designer?

For solo makers, wearing every hat is almost unavoidable - developer, marketer, support, product… and often designer too.

AI makes this even easier now. You can generate UI pretty quickly, but a lot of products end up relying on consistent, polished AI-generated solutions rather than something truly unique or thoughtfully designed for their specific product.

So I’m curious:

Do you design the UI/UX yourself when building solo?

Or do you think bringing in a designer (even for a few key screens) is worth it?

And if you’re using AI for design, do you feel it’s enough to get you to a good product experience?

Would love to hear how other makers approach it.

I'd argue yes, mostly because the AI just cannot give you that FEEL that you are looking for unless you put in extreme amounts of manhour uk? might as well pay a designer to mainting it, probaly cheaper when you consider the costs saved based on the time saved

 Give five =) I agree, it can save you a lot of time that you’d probably have to spend later.

I’m somewhere in the middle. While building Uxia, I’ve changed my mind on this a few times: I think a solo maker should absolutely own the first version of the flow, otherwise it’s easy to polish something you don’t fully understand yet. But as soon as the product gets even slightly complex, an outside perspective becomes invaluable. AI is great for exploring directions quickly; the real test is still watching someone use the flow without explaining it and seeing where their mental model diverges from yours. That’s usually where the best design decisions come from.

 I think a designer is not just needed to polish. A designer must be part of the thinking process of how to build the flow. That’s why I think a good UI/UX designer can help from the early stages.

But I agree with you about watching real users experience it.

 Yes, I am building shim, it sits between your ai app and ai providers. And makes your ai traffic more compliant, more visible and more token efficient. It is open source and our site is under rebranding :) we decided to go with an UI expert. I can send details if you want. any feedback on product and/or rebranding would be nice.
