People are switching from OpenAI to Claude following Sam Altman's announcement today.
TL;DR: Anthropic refused to sign a contract with the Pentagon that would have allowed the U.S. military to use all of its models without restrictions. Anthropic insisted on an exception, and brace yourself, that its models cannot be used: 1) for mass surveillance of citizens, 2) for autonomous killing. Now the administration is threatening that if the founder of Anthropic doesn't change his mind by a certain date, they will come after him.
Google, OpenAI, and Musk (Grok) have all signed the contract.
Following Sam Altman's announcement over the past few hours, people have been speaking out massively about cancelling their OpenAI subscriptions and subscribing to Claude.
What stance do you take toward big tech companies after this?
Are you staying loyal to ChatGPT, or are you switching to Claude?
BTW, one of the users on Reddit proclaimed about Claude:
"Claude needs time to warm up to you. It's strange, but somehow that's just how it works with Claude. It's the most human-adjacent AI I've ever used." I am switching too.

Claude any day of the week, people will talk about this in AI Alignment studies for decades to come - they lost a $200m contract but earned billions in respect and goodwill.

@ananay_batraΒ Only for this move they deserve the support.

@busmark_w_nikaΒ Well... not just this one, they're class apart in terms of their constitution, safety and how they've built the product itself.
For builders, more options - competition on all layers of AI, including open-source models - are always better. If moral and ethical stand makes sense for you, go for it. But if the goal is to use the best product for its strengths, then such a stand will be harder to take or maintain.
From my own experience, I have been biased against OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and xAI at different times in my journey. And anytime I have shunned one for a while, there is some strength or feature they come up with and I go back to using them for whatever specific need I have for them.
Lastly, on a very personal level - falling for the latest political gimmick or ideological drama, picking sides depending on who is in the white house - is a recipe for unnecessary anguish. My only action I can control is voting and opining (which I do freely) but I won't stop using a product because of Social media claiming: Dario is a martyr/EA scumbag, Sam is such a phony liar, Elon is Nazi, Sundar is running a woke company etc etc. We have to remember leadership at any level is hard and they all have an immense pressure they get from ALL the sides and make decisions that never appease all of their constituents.
I likely will never see that sort of leadership burden or exposure but its a great exercise to imagine how would I behave at every step of the entrepreneurial journey. And if the ego says - oh, I will never do THAT. Worth some self-examination. :)

@soniasarao_Β Yes, it would be ideal to use tools according to functionality and benefit, but when a company becomes large and is represented in bodies where politics takes place, things happen on a societal level, and we can show our position, what we like/dislike about a brand, with our consumer choices.
These companies are trying to defend the state's interests. But they should also defend the interests of consumers. When consumers do not get what they want, and they are highly aware, they also have the right to express it.
@busmark_w_nikaΒ @outofelementΒ Luckily, with Claude, functionality is superior. I think you may be wrong regarding the behaviour of people who put their money where their mouth is.
@soniasarao_Β well said. A lot of tech world falls for the "latest political gimmick" with louder voices picking sides or pushing their ideological preferences. The winners will be the ones that drown these partisans out and focus on making the best product.
@soniasarao_Β rolling with the punches of social media waves clearly is unwise.
But observing the actions of the AI CEOβs and their boards, and seeing if these can be reconciled with our individual values is an absolute must to be able to look ourselves in the mirror and still liking what we see there.
Anthropic has a clear focus on their strategy. Props for the guys

@vlad_fedoniukΒ I started using them, and so far, I am satisfied :)

The bar for ethics is so low.
Open AI is not to be trusted. None of the big tech firms are really. Surprised google didn't jump at the chance considering 'Don't be evil' isn't their motto anymore.
I might be switching to GLM 5 despite its limitations, or I might go back to Claude Code

@build_with_ajΒ The owner of Anthrropic is actually a scout now, a good party. I'm sorry that we don't have such smart and fairly moral people (not only in Europe or America, but more so in the whole world).
Not a fan of any kind of effective altruism embedded within AI. This concept is ultimately a relative determination. My hope is that providers that hijack their own models with their own value set fail and providers or open source models that prioritize truth rise.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@roymckenzieΒ Open source rules! But which projects are good to follow in that space?
@busmark_w_nikaΒ Take a look at @LM Studio. It has a great "marketplace" so to speak of free models you can download and try. Helps you choose a model that might work with your computer specs. The models are getting more efficient and software developers are figuring out how to run them with fewer resources. This is still a big gap. My other hope is that the hardware constraints come down considerably. Hard to get GPUs or hardware to run larger models locally. I'm constrained to 6B parameter models or less. Still takes a lot of resources. Ministral series of Mistral models are pretty good and freely available.

@roymckenzieΒ Thank you, will have a look at it.
@sunbashΒ if you believe in relative truth, then youβre NGMI

@maliyanΒ I need to say, it is my very first experience with the tool and I am satisfied so far :)
okay now what are we going to do?
@fajarsiddiqΒ I wrote a post about it. Everyone keeps sharing the fact that it happened (or posting screenshots of cancelling their subscriptions), but what does it mean for my data and what should I do? - should be the real question https://www.producthunt.com/p/general/many-are-quitting-chatgpt-most-of-them-haven-t-researched-what-s-actually-happening
minimalist phone: creating folders
@fajarsiddiqΒ Not so sure, but most likely to watch what happens on X. π

I actually do not think OpenAI's decision was wrong. Altman seems to believe that the AI can not and will not be used for autonomous weapon systems and mass domestic surveillance under the contract, and I can follow his reasoning, see also this statement.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@konrad_sxΒ The thing is how things are going to play out in reality. Because anything can happen and more and more, decisions of the US (and one man) are more unpredictable. We cannot be certain of anything.
App Finder
@busmark_w_nikaΒ True. But that still doesn't mean OpenAI's decision was wrong. From the before cited statement:
"In our agreement, we protect our red lines through a more expansive, multi-layered approach. We retain full discretion over our safety stack, we deploy via cloud, cleared OpenAI personnel are in the loop, and we have strong contractual protections"
"Based on what we know, we believe our contract provides better guarantees and more responsible safeguards than earlier agreements, including Anthropicβs original contract. We think our red lines are more enforceable here because deployment is limited to cloud-only (not at the edge), keeps our safety stack working in the way we think is best, and keeps cleared OpenAI personnel in the loop."
I don't know enough to assess this, but most other people talking about this probably also don't.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@konrad_sxΒ On the paper, it sounds cool, but as I said, at this moment, I am afraid that I do not believe in anything because of the impulsive behaviour that has taken over this world, and it's hard to say whether conditions will be respected.
App Finder
@busmark_w_nikaΒ We don't know that, yes. But if OpenAI had refused the deal, the Pentagon would have made a contract with another company or developed it themselves, in which case things may have been worse, so I still think OpenAI's decision may well have been right.

Claude is the #1 free app on the App Store in the US and Canada.
I took screenshots of the App Store's Top Free Apps ranking across 7 countries at the exact same time (March 1, 2026, 09:00 UTC) to compare AI app adoption.
The results:
- US: #1
- Canada: #1
- France: #3
- Germany: #3
- UK: #4
- Italy: #8
- Japan: #22
AI adoption varies significantly across developed nations. English-speaking countries lead, Western Europe follows closely, and Japan β one of the most tech-advanced nations β tells a completely different story.
Mar 2 22:00 UTC: France and Germany both hit #1! Japan climbing steadily from #22 β #14 β #10. The world is catching on.
Mar 3 22:00 UTC: UK climbed to #3, Italy to #4. Japan holding at #10. All countries showing positive total change.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@daisuke_adachiΒ Europe should try more to make it no1.
My Texas Method
@busmark_w_nikaΒ Agreed! As of 13 hours later, Claude climbed to #2 in Germany and #5 in Italy. Japan jumped from #22 to #14 too. It's moving fast.
minimalist phone: creating folders
@daisuke_adachiΒ We should need one more faux pas from OpenAI, Grok or any other company to make Anthropic the most popular. π
My Texas Method
@busmark_w_nikaΒ Anthropic, like Apple, has strong intrinsic value β and I believe that is what will ultimately take it to the top. Think Different!
