⛔ Do personal problems affect your work?
by•
The last two days, I had some personal problems and spent basically the whole time trying to solve them.
And during that time… I did no work, no posts, no ideas, no inspiration, nothing... =D
Just me, solving my own puzzle !
It made me wonder:
Do personal problems affect your work too?
Do you have any hacks for putting your personal headaches aside somehow and still staying focused and productive?
Or do you just accept that sometimes your brain is busy with something else and let it be?
The funniest part was getting a full DM with people asking ,,where are you on Product Hunt?,,
Honestly, that made me much happier =)
Maybe disappearing for two days is also a way to find out people actually notice you! =D

The hardest part is pretending your brain is when it's clearly somewhere else.

@gavin_theodore Exactly =) That's why I found it more fair to stay alone for a couple of days.
But honestly, how do people actually compartmentalize personal stress and work? I have never figured that out.

@tomderaad05 For example, when I sit at my desk, I forget about almost all my problems and just start creating and working.
But when you do that all the time, those problems start piling up somewhere inside. And one day, you just can’t continue working anymore - you have to stop and deal with them =)
Sometimes disappearing for a couple of days probably does more good than forcing yourself to post. Did you feel more refreshed when you came back?

@andrew__charles Much more. I drove ~1000 km alone, and it gave me a factory reset =D
I usually switch to easy tasks when my brain is overloaded. Emails, cleanup, admin stuff. Nothing requiring genius 😂

@paisley_coleman Problems and genius weren’t made for each other =D
Does anyone actually manage to leave personal problems at the door, though? Feels impossible sometimes.

@owen_simmons It depends on the level of stress and the level of inspiration you have that day. If the problem isn’t big enough, or the thing you’re working on is really breathtaking, you can leave the problem at the door.
I have had "productive" days where I finished everything except the one thing I actually needed to do 😂

@juhan_polinert Yes ..Those days are really productive! =D
Ideally I wouldn't let it, but when I fight with my family it does hit my motivation, and there are times I lose the will to work lol

@hisashispace My mom was my math teacher. After family fights, I’d see her go to school looking so sad, but the moment she entered the classroom, she transformed into the happiest, most relaxed person =)
That was always an example to me of how doing what you love can heal you from life’s problems...
When it comes to dealing with personal problems and still being productive, I think it helps to be selective about the tasks you choose.
For instance, if I'm having a personal problem, I don't do any writing because I just can't think. Instead, I'll draft or edit a piece, which engages my brain and helps me to focus but doesn't require quite as deep a focus as the writing process.

@peter_jenkins1 Are there situations where you just can't do anything, even small tasks?
@adana Sometimes there have been. I advise clients I'm experiencing some personal difficulties and ask them to bear with me. It eases the pressure a little bit and helps me to deal with whatever is going on and then get back to it a little bit later. Or I can push ahead, knowing I've managed the client's expectations.
