šŸ“¢ What social media do you use as a maker?

by•

I’m not really a person who likes sharing my everyday life online =)

That’s one of the reasons I’m really happy to be part of the Product Hunt community.

I like being able to stay in touch with like-minded people and have everyday conversations about things we’re building, learning, and interested in.

But I understand that social media is a big part of today’s lifestyle, and it’s absolutely great that it gives people a way to connect, share, and find each other.

So, I’m curious:

Do you have social media as a maker?

What kind of things do you share there?

Is it mostly about your product, your journey, ideas, or something completely different?

And maybe you’d like to share your pages here - would be nice to discover what other makers are doing and follow along =)

I have never been consistent with social media. do you think consistency matters more than choosing the right platform?

Ā Oh! Just 2 seconds ago I was answering the comment above and asking about consistency myself =D

I think consistency is good for platform algorithms and helps you stay visible. But for followers, I guess the most valuable part is seeing or reading something genuinely useful and relevant to that specific platform.

Ā  Yeah, that makes sense. I guess consistency gets you seen, but relevance is what gives people a reason to stick around.

Ā Exactly! And what feed do you usually scroll through for the information or content you’re looking for?

For me a good platform is one where people actually eply and share their own experience.

Ā I can’t disagree with that! And on which platform do you feel like that’s actually happening?

The best channel is where your customer is already on. Preferably complaining about the problem you're solving for. I'm on x and reddit for example because that's where founders are more honest about their struggles and achievements - and that's all that matter for me.

Ā Do you follow founders, or are there specific groups where the discussions happen?

What I've found is that it really takes dedication to become a strong voice in a social media atmosphere. To grow your brand, especially if it's digital, you almost are forced to have some sort of online presence. In today's world, unfortunately with all the spam, it takes more effort to stand out. With Vassant, I've been active on Substack for quite a while, but recently ramping up my activity. Long-form posts, short notes, and creator support all help grow your brand visibility and build community.

Ā I haven't been on Substack. Are there specific groups there, or do you mostly share your own experiences? How does it work?

LinkedIn for official announcements, plus reading and replying to industry news in people's comments.

Product Hunt, after a big pause, we launched here 2 years ago and are planning a new launch soon.

Reddit, to feel what's on the edge of my topic (AI visibility).

Instagram and YouTube, trying to kill them, since they kill my time šŸ˜…

To be honest, I'm very into old-school reading, books, after a full day in front of screens.

Ā I liked your approach to the old-school way and killing some platforms =D

And do you consider PH mainly a place to launch products from time to time? Because in my case, even after launching, it continues to be my favorite place to communicate.

Ā Oh wow! As for PH - the first time I showed up was after my first startup failed, just to see what people were building. Then a pause. The second time was to launch a product with a team, as their marketing lead. Then another two-year pause. And here I am again, launching my own thing this time.

Apparently I need a proper pause between each chapter šŸ˜„

Ā Wow, it’s great that you’re going to launch your own! What problem does your new product solve? It’s super interesting to know!

analytics and content creation for ai visibility. We’re trying to approach it with data science, so results are reliable.

Running social for the Mac apps I work on taught me that nobody wants to follow a file converter, so the account only works when I post the problem instead of the product. What has actually pulled people in for you, the build updates or the posts where something broke?

Ā Maybe seeing a problem they actually have is what really grabs people’s attention.

In my case, I’m not very active on social media myself. I’ve only recently started doing some activity on LinkedIn related to the product.
And where’s your main channel for posting?

Ā  LinkedIn for me personally, and the apps lean on short video, because a converter is much easier to show than to describe. Since you have just started there, are you posting as yourself or as the product account?

Ā I actually do both. From my personal account, I’m trying to be active in the community, and from the product page, I post about the product itself.

Ā  That split is the right one, and it is where I keep landing too. Personal account to be a person, product page for the product.

Mostly X and Reddit i use X for quick build notes and opinions Reddit for the longer problem/solution stuff because people actually tell you when the framing is off. i almost never post personal life stuff either it’s mostly product, lessons, and the occasional ā€œhere’s what

Ā Yes, good approach! And what about PH? Are you planning to launch here?

Linkedin - sometimes facebook for the demo we service.

I would love to be on Git/X but I feel like that is more for the engineers. I'd say PH counts as a social media ecosystem but there are limitaitons that exist here that don't elsewhere. Primarily a lack of DM / Direct communication mechanism. I wouldn't mind a "wall" equivalent to have some sort of comms beyond a thread but not quite a DM.

Ā Yes, agreed! I feel the same way about Git and X.

And about the DM gap - today . Come join us! =D

Glad I’m not the only one with this question! We just started doing YouTube videos and will cut them into short snippets for LinkedIn. Our focus right now is just talking about the problem we solve. We’ve shot 12 and haven’t shown the product once.

Ā Very interesting! Would you mind sharing your YouTube channel or LinkedIn?
I’d love to see the kind of content you’re creating around the product.

of course. Here is the link: We only have a few published. It’s early but something we are committed to working on.

Ā Thanks for sharing. Subscribed to your channel - interesting to follow along!

thanks so much!!

Mostly X and LinkedIn. I share what I’m building, what I’m learning, and random thoughts/questions along the way. New to Product Hunt and enjoying meeting other builders here too

Ā And what are your plans here on PH? =) Are you preparing for an upcoming launch?

Ā Yes, I’m preparing for an upcoming launch. Still early though, so right now I’m mostly here to learn how people use PH, meet other builders, and understand what makes a good launch before I put mine out there.

Ā What problem does your product solve?
